Hi folks,
I am looking for a good urologist connected with HOMS hospital in Santiago. Here’s a little background. My wife got very sick this past March with several problems related to a UTI… to numerous to mention here and the infection(s) went septic and she was a couple days away from death. We have HUMANO insurance and are pretty well connected to the Clinica Corominas in Santiago. Since March she has been admitted to the Clinica Corominas three separate times for intravenous antibiotics and array of other treatments and tests. We have seen about 6 different specialists including infectious disease, urology, heart, kidney….etc. She has taken about every antibiotic known to man including me injecting her daily. After treatment, then culture and blood tests, the infection(s) go away, but come back again within a couple weeks. We have done everything we know to keep our casa as sterile as possible, chlorinating and filtering cistern water (bathing only), keeping all surfaces clean etc. I should mention that from one trip to the hospital she acquired “klebsiella” which is a “superbug” that is commonly picked up at hospitals!!! HA!! So now this has being going on for almost 8 months and we can’t seem to kick it so I am thinking maybe it’s time to try HOMS. Either that or go to the states……which she does not want to do!!! Thanks in advance for any referral you may offer up!!! Thanks!! Respectfully.

Dr. Miguel Caba or Dr. Miguel Rodriguez.

Dr. Caba has a very busy practice and could be difficult to see, although he is an excellent clinician. Dr. Rodriguez is an excellent physician with outstanding patient communications skills.

Both speak English.

However, you may need a referral to an infectious disease specialist for the "super bug."

"Superbug" = MRSA.

I don't know how well the DR is set up to battle MRSA. The anitibiotics to treat it are hugely expensive.

I had a bout of recurring subcutaneous MRSA on 2006. I wrote about the experience here. The 14-day cycle of specific oral antibiotics to finnaly cure it cost $2300, and was just part of a daily regimine.

It can kill you. You may need to go to the states.

The "Superbug was "klebsiella" and it seems that is is commonly picked up in hospitals. The klebsiella was treated and is gone presently. Right now she is being treated for Ecoli. Believe me we have researched all this. She is to have an endoscopy (bladder and kidneys) next week but we had to get rid of the Ecoli first, and this is what Rodriguez will do after consultation. The list of infections she has had since January is LONG, but all derived for this persistent UTI. We are going to give Rodriguez a shot at this and if we cannpt solve it...then its off to the states. She is feeling fine......but next week may be a different story. Its tough!

A word of caution .....
be sure that you yourself don't give it back to her.

I am sure you've been warned about that

How'd this situation turn out?

I have a friend who had a similar situation about 18 months ago --- an ecoli infection that wouldn't quit. She was in La Union, ended up with a different doctor at HOMS and got it sorted.

The Klebsiella is a very common cause of UTI, and the bacteria is not exclusive to hospitals. You say she is free of that bacteria but it recurs frequently. There are some variations of it that are near drug resistant and require specialized treatment.
It frequently causes lung and colon problems.

You didn't state your wife's age, but this bacteria can be life threatening in older patients and Klebsiella pneumonia is very dangerous. If you can, get her to a different environment, maybe a change is the key to treating it.

If your wife consumes alcohol she needs to stop, also stop working in the garden and resource where you get vegetables, and fruit and change the brand of water used for cooking. Use Clorox in all laundry including bedding and towels.

Sounds like you are trying everything but if she is 55 or older you probably should consider leaving your current living situation during treatment, even if that is a new locale within the DR. Best of luck.
