Hello everybody, this is my first post and i have a question. A few months ago i bought a piece of land around the playa chiquita area (i can be a little impulsive somethimes) i know it is like 3 minutes walking from the police station but still my question is...how safe is it living in this area. I am planning to build something modest and not too fancy. Any tips are welcome.

Greetings,

Martin.

I would not live there. I know someone that lived there about 6 years ago and it was not safe at all. May have changed, but I would not bet on it.

Now that you have heard from those that do NOT live in Playa Chiquita, maybe someone that does can better help you.

Sent you a PM that you will not be able to respond via PM here until you have 10 (?) posts but either you have some contact info already OR post here and ask and I'll send private contact via PM to you.

Good Luck and welcome to the Dominican Republic.

I have been there for 5 years. I know the day and night security supervisors. It is the safest place to stay on the north coast. They have had some issues with guests and nite security being bribed to allow guests. They were fired immediately. Some owners live there year round and keep a very good look on the place. The condo association is very well run. No I am not selling anything. I just feel very safe with the professional security there. They are trained and paid very well.

Sky I would not feel safe anywhere else on the north coast.

What a bunch of BS... Lots of safe condo communities in Cabarete. That said, I would not live outside a safe condo community unless I had bars on the windows and dogs and in some places even a gun. Lived here 17 years.

Is there a NEW casino in Playa Chiquita? I know of the very old one that was very run down as of the last time I was there about a year ago. If you are near the old casino, then you may have some security concerns but really depends on who are your neighbors. Half a block or one street over can make a big difference.

The area around Infinity Blue has become very much safer in the last few years.

You are constantly dealing with the perception that being a foreigner, you are rich. By the standards of many people in Sousa and those passing through, you probably are. Proximity to the police station is not necessarily a plus. If you are going to put a lamb among the wolves, you'll need to employ significant passive and active security measures - you will be fine until the time that you are not. The timing is decided by others, not you.

Hey DR Solar, no i am not your new neighbour. I have not met anyone yet..it is just a piece of land that needs a lot of work.

I love their professional security cameras at the entrance. Looks very well run.

good advice ---- as we approach December...

Yes Mr. Webster. Nov. is the time when an uptick in crime and scams show a big uptick. This is a yearly problem but with some planning and a little time reviewing, fixing and upgrading your security and self reminder of where you are and what is going on you should be in a much better position.

Some things just get put off during the year but...

Nov. 1 is when I start making sure my security motion sensors and cameras are all working. I check the walls for any tree branches that might be used to enter and on one wall that the razor wire is in good condition or replaced. Outside lighting checked and fully operational as well as the auto on/off sensors. Door, window and padlocks are working and treated with graphite.

Car papers all in order with up to date copies of our needed permits and info that we might need to show the police and cell phone emergency numbers up to date. And I renew my pistol permit and even clean it and the shotgun. lol.

No matter how safe you THINK you are... no place is perfectly safe. Ya gotta do some things on your own.

Welcome

I think you're mostly interested in security, I don't know enough about the playa chiquita area to be helpful. But if you ever want to discuss efficient caribe building methods, I'm in.

Does the piece you bought have a wall on 3 sides of the lot?

My answer to that type of question is usually to say that it is probably as safe as anywhere in New York, or Boston or St Louis or St Paul or most anywhere in the USA, but I see you are not an American. and cannot comment on how safe it is in Berlin or Brussels or Paris.
