Santo Domingo celebrates: A Capital Destination
The Santo Domingo Hotels Association is hosting the fifth edition of its annual international event to promote the capital city of Santo Domingo de Guzmán as a tourism destination. The Santo Domingo: Destino Capital event opens Tuesday, 14 November and ends on Friday, 17 November 2017. It is taking place at the Embajador Hotel. More than 40 speakers are focusing on the attractions of the capital city and the challenges ahead.

“Santo Domingo is at its best to receive major artistic, sport and social events, and has the facilities for workshops, conventions and incentive trips,” said Roberto Henriquez, president of the Santo Domingo Hotel Association.


Cabo Rojo Open Waters Swim
Small hotels in southwestern Pedernales are reserved for the next weekend when on Sunday, 19 November 2017, the best long distance swimmers and triathletes are meeting for the annual Cabo Rojo Challenge. This event is known as the most beautiful open waters swim in the country. The distances are 1.9 km and 3.8 km.

The event is organized every year by Stono in Santo Domingo. There may yet be cancellations for those who may be interested in participating. Call 809 549-7285.


Eurowings flights to Punta Cana and Puerto Plata
The low-cost long-haul airline Eurowings has begun direct flights from Dusseldorf International Airport (DUS) in Germany to Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ). Promotional fares of EUR199 one way are being offered to kick start the long haul flight.

The flight departs Dusseldorf at 1:40pm and arrives in Punta Cana at 4:25pm; the return flight departs 8:55pm and arrives in Dusseldorf the next morning at 11:25am. The flights are operated on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

Eurowings is beginning direct flights on Thursday Dusseldorf-Puerto Plata direct flight on 14 December 2017. The airline already flies to Puerto Plata from Cologne-Bonn, Munich, Dresden and Leipzig/Halle.

Eurowings also offers flights from Stuttgart to Punta Cana and from Hamburg to Punta Cana.
The airline also flies to Varadero in Cuba and Cancun in Mexico in the Caribbean region.

Samana road repairal opens up new areas for visiting
The Ministry of Public Wors has announced it has finished Rancho Español-Batey Hormiga-El Majagual-Samaná city road in Samana. This will benefit farm, cattle ranching and tourism activities in Samana. The two-lane 8.6 km internal peninsular road has been fitted with retroreflective safety devices (cat’s eye) to facilitate evening driving. The road connects the communities of Majagual, Batey Hormiga, Arroyo Chico and Rancho Español.


FestiCoco Nagua from 15-19 November
The annual Coconut Festival of Nagua is being held from 15 to 19 November 2017 in northeastern Nagua, María Trinidad Sánchez province. There are stands for exhibition and sale of coconut-based products, food made with coconut ingredients, coconut arts and crafts, live cooking shows. Also on the program are beach activities, conferences, student contests, arts and crafts workshops, business rounds, field day trips, tours along the coconut route, art murals, dance and theater presentations, taste contests, trade show and more. The event is held to promote the coconut industry in the Dominican Republic The Dominican Republic produces 286,934 tons of coconut a year, and is 17th largest producer in the world, according to FAO statistics (March 2017).

The DR exports most of its dry coconut production to the United States, Haiti and Canada. There are 38,000 hectares planted with coconut, producing around 300 million units of coconut at present. 36% of the coconut planted area is located in Nagua, with a production last year of 98,522 units.

The FestiCoco2017 is sponsored by the City of Nagua, the Federation of Neighborhood Boards of Nagua, the Nagua Strategic Development Forum, the Association of Coconut Producers, the Chamber of Commerce of Nagua and the Grupo Rica. Also the IDIAF, Nagua Provincial Board of Tourism, among others.


January-October tourism stats: one million tourists a month
From January to October 2017, some 10,107,257 passengers arrived or departed on regular flights and another 1,427,096 on charter flights from Dominican international airports. The total arrivals and departures were 11,534,353, according to data from the Dominican Civil Aviation Institute (IDAC).

An IDAC press release reports that from January to October 2017, there were 72,670 flight operations of regular flights and 13,009 charter flight operations. The monthly average of travel through Dominican airports was one million passengers.

Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) registers the most traffic with 4,896,607 passengers, followed by Las Americas International (SDQ) with 3,124,545; Cibao International in Santiago with 1,152,459 and Puerto Plata’s Gregorio Luperón International Airport (POP) with 653,299. Traffic through La Romana International Airport (LRM) was 160,241 passengers, El Catey (AZS) in Samana 99,952 passengers, and La Isabela (JBQ) in northern Santo Domingo 20,154.
Traffic in October 2017 was 805,979 in regular flights and 101,764 in charter flights.
