President Medina visits site of first European settlement
President Danilo Medina was in Puerto Plata on Sunday, 19 November 2017 to visit the La Isabela Historic National Park. He ordered improvements be made to the road leading to La Isabela and the construction of a bridge.

President Medina toured the La Isabela museum, hosted by Culture Minister Pedro Vergés. The museum, built with the assistance of the Spanish government, was inaugurated in 1992, to mark the 500th anniversary of the encounter of the New and Old Worlds.

President Medina’s visit is a follow up to Decree 38-17 that ordered improvements be made to the historic site that marks where the first European settlement in the New World was built in 1494.

Government promotes exporting to the Caribbean
The government and private sector will be participating in a National Trade Forum on Wednesday, 29 November 2017, focused on promoting trade between the DR and the Caribbean. The effort seeks to identify regional markets for specific Dominican products and provide logistical support to facilitate exports. The effort is being led by the new Table for the Promotion of Exports to the Caribbean, a public-private partnership. A goal of the initiative is to reduce red tape to encourage more exports.

The National Trade Forum is coordinated by the Administrative Ministry of the Presidency and the Center for Exports and Investments (CEI-RD). There will be technical presentations, a panel on institutional advances in matters of export and several workshops on logistics and market connectivity.

“We are inviting all companies interested in exporting to the Caribbean, or that are already doing so, to participate. We are sure it will open new markets for them,” said Administrative Minister of the Presidency Jose Ramon Peralta. He said the event is open to the general public. He stressed the government’s interest in promoting more intra-Caribbean trade.

Participating for the government in the meetings are the Administrative Ministry of the Presidency, CEI-RD, the ministries of Industry & Commerce, Foreign Relations, Public Health, National Competitiveness Council, General Customs Agency (DGA) among others.

For the private sector, there will be participants from the Dominican Association of Industries (AIRD), the Dominican Association of Exporters (Adoexpo), the Agribusiness Board (JAD), National Business Council (Conep) and the Santo Domingo Chamber of Commerce.

Statistics show Dominican population is aging
The National Statistics Office (ONE) says every day there are percentage-wise more seniors in the country due to a declining birthrate and longer life expectancy. Alexandra Izquierdo, director of the ONE, says that the demographic changes present new challenges for the social security system and institutions that provide care for the elderly.

Izquierdo shared other insights into Dominican demographics. She highlighted that the 1920 Census showed a population of 894,665, with only 20% living in cities. By 2020, she said, the population will have grown tenfold, with the Dominican population expected to reach 10,044,000 with three out of every four inhabitants living in a city, demanding greater services in education, electricity, transport, potable water, housing, among others.

The 2010 Census showed the country has a population of 9,445,281, of which 49.83% are women and 50.17% are men.

Haitians claim their Dominican nationality
Protestors claimed their Dominican nationality and disputed the nationality requirements confirmed by Constitutional Court ruling 168-13 and Migration Law 169-14. The protestors claim they have a right to Dominican nationality on grounds that the island was only one before Dominican independence was proclaimed in 1844. The protest took place on Saturday, 18 November 2017 at Independence Park.

Editorialist Adriano Miguel Tejada of Diario Libre commented on the protest in an editorial in Diario Libre on 20 November 2017 that this was a provocation as these protestors knew what they were doing as they were using the same Haitian argument that the island is one and indivisible. He writes that the taking on of Dominican nationality by those of Haitian descent has not been denied. Rather there are requirements that need to be fulfilled as in any organized country. Tejada says Dominican authorities need to respond to the provocations by applying the law.

British Government says EPA rules to prevail after Brexit
After a meeting of Cariforum ministers with Greg Hands, UK minister of state for trade policy, on 16 November 2017, the British Government agreed that the present terms of the Cariforum-EU Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) will govern its trade relationship with the Dominican Republic and the rest of the Caribbean region after it leave the European Union, as reported by the Jamaica Gleaner.

"Acknowledging that the UK is not legally permitted to enter into trade negotiations with any third parties before its departure from the EU, rolling over existing arrangements under the EPA is a positive step providing certainty to our private sector,” stated Jamaican Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Kamina Johnson Smith after signing the joint statement. Johnson has assumed the role of lead spokesperson for Cariforum.

"Cariforum will also continue to work on expanding trade with our valued EU partners," stated Johnson Smith following the signing of the joint statement.
The EPA has been in effect since 2008 with the EU applying duty-free-quota-free market access to all products from Cariforum countries, except arms.

The Dominican Republic is a member of Cariforum.

Police suspect vehicle malfunction caused death of three

The bodies of the three were found inside a vehicle parked in the La Esperilla neighborhood in Santo Domingo on Wednesday, 15 November 2017. Really? your reporting should be a bit less biased on this delicate issue. I know it is complicated but
only a bit..
I personally know some of them born here, never been in haiti, dont speak any creole and now paperless - they aint haitians. and the are *not* claiming at all that " have a right to Dominican nationality on grounds that the island was only one ". they just says were dominicains all their life until 168-13
