IFA Hotels to add 2,000 rooms to its Bávaro resort complex
The European Lopesan Hotel Group and IFA Hotels & Touristik AG began the construction of the 1,020-room Lopesan Costa Bávaro resort adjacent to the 650-room IFA Villas Bávaro resort that is centrally located in the Punta Cana beach area. To be built within an area of 100,000 square meters, the new Lopesan Costa Bávaro will have 1,020 hotel rooms and several swimming pools, including one connected to the beach itself. The resort calls for a EUR130 million investment. The opening of the hotel is planned for May 2019.

Plans also call for the expansion of the IFA Villas Bávaro to 1,500 rooms, for an overall 2,500 rooms on the Lopesan Hotel Group/IFA Hotels complex of 200,000 square meters including beachfront property.

Iberostar announces construction of Colonial City hotel
Miguel Fluxa, chief executive officer of Grupo Iberostar of Spain, in an interview with Arecoa, announced the construction of 3,000 more hotel rooms in two hotels in the Colonial City and Bavaro beach area of Punta Cana. Iberostar operates the Iberostar Punta Cana, Iberostar Bávaro Hotel Punta Cana and the Iberostar Bávaro Suites in Arena Gorda, Punta Cana.

Iberostar will be operating the old Hotel Las Mercedes with its New Orleans-style French balconies on Calle Las Mercedes in the Colonial City, as reported by Infoturdominicano. The 100-room deluxe hotel will be the first city hotel of the Spanish chain that has several resorts in Punta Cana. As reported, the city hotel will have an area of 2,997 square meters.

In the interview with Arecoa, Fluxa highlighted the positive working relationship between public and private sector in the Dominican Republic. He praised the government investments in infrastructure that have shortened the distances between the destinations. “I’m sure most people are not aware of the scope of what this country has done in the past 25 years, in terms of development and tourism infrastructure and services” Fluxa told Arecoa. “I remember the difficulties there were for everything we had to import everything, and today we are now in a first rate tourism level,” he said.

“We thank the Dominican people for your efforts to spur the tourism revolution in your country. There are very few tourism destinations such as the Dominican Republic. Investors are everyday more assured of their investment - but at the start, as you may recall, it was an adventure,” he recalled. He highlighted that in the 80s when they built their first hotel in Punta Cana, it was a half-day trip to get to the capital city. Today the trip can be made in less than three hours.

Hernandez said when the hotel opens in November 2018 it would add 909 hotel rooms. Of these, 291 will be in an adults-only area.
