Largely depends on your budget. I usually like to break up my trip between the Malecon. This time I stayed at Catalonia SD which I found very nice and the colonial zone. This time I tried an AIRBNB which was very nice albeit a bit noisy especially on weekends. The Uptown hotels like Intercontinental are new and look amazing, but are geared more towards a business traveler. The Malecon Hotels will definitely give you more flavor. And the Colonial City is a must to visit and get to know.

For peace and tranquility in SD......Dominican Fiesta. Not the newest, but I have yet to find a better pool, tennis courts, and basketball court facilities in SD. I am currently there now, so if you have any questions.......

Best is subjective of course depending upon needs and there are more pricey options, but it puts me near my clients and in a very safe area of SD.

The Fiesta is now part of the Palladium Hotel Group.

Good luck with your search.

The best part of Santo Domingo in my opinion is the Colonial City. Fab restaurants, bars, parks, historical sites, and a great vibe. It is also incredibly safe and just beautiful to wander on the same streets as the colonial settlers all those years ago. You can stay in a hotel in converted Colonial House with original floors and details. The best is Casa Sánchez Boutique Hotel, which not only has a lovely Colonial feel and ambiance, has all the mod cons such as a pool, jacuzzi, flat screen TVs, great bathrooms, but also has an excellent restaurant, and the highest rated staff of all of the hotels not only in the Colonial Zone but also in Santo Domingo. It is number one on TripAdvisor too. The website is www.casasanchezhotel.com and if you mention DR1 you get preferential treatment!

Nicolás de Ovando, Embajador, Jaragua.

Maybe JW Marriot (for almost 400 dollars per night).

Embassy Suites (a favorite of mine), Intercontinental Real are real nice. Malecon hotels such as Sheraton (recent update) and Jaragua (also recent update) are also good. Friends have said the Embajador, now Royal Hideaway has been recently updated and is very nice. Another Malecon hotel Crown Plaza is good. JW Marriott while very very nice is quite pricey. Probably depends on your budget and what area your looking to stay in.

I've stayed at a wide range of hotels in SD but I mostly prefer IHG branded hotels since they have the best reward program and benefits in my opinion. My favorite hotel by far is the crowne plaza mainly do their service and since I'm a platinum member I get a nice room every time, the only thing I wouldn't recommend there is the casino (attendants are rude at time). Depending on your budget the intercontinental is very nice as well it being one of the newest in SD. I have noticed they have water heater issues and if you're not an ambassador or spire elite member they won't give you anything as far as benefits. For the same price as a basic room you can get a nice suite in the crowne plaza or holiday Inn. Renaissance jaragua is nice as well and they have a nice casino and merengue bar to enjoy shows at night. Obviously, there's the zona colonial to check out, restaurants and stops on the malecón, check out the malls like agora mall. Also, download the app Que hacer hoy and it gives a list of things going on around the capital that day like shows, happy hours, etc.

All good recomendations you have above, but will be more on what ypu are looking for, as you are coming as a tourist, place to visit Colonial Zone with all the musseums,  Botanic Garden, Los 3 ojos park,  Hotel to stay better Malecon area that is walk distance to the Colonial Zone or in Colonial zone area.

I second El Beaterio.  My favourite place to stay, and it’s where we got married.

Stayed at the W&P hotel this past weekend. Excellent value for money. They have a rooftop terrace with bar, lounge, rest, pool, and jacuzzi. Good customer service.
My only complaint, was that the food was a bit pricey.
