What if Haiti was a white nation?

I know for a fact that the subject caught your attention. The fact of the matter is that color plays a major role in how Dominicans feel about Hatians. There is no denying that. Imagine, for a minute, that Haiti was all white, don't you think that things would be a little different? Let's be realistic! If that were true we probably would not even have a separate Island. Am I right or not? Imagine that our neighbor to the west was Puerto Rico instead of Haiti. How would things be then? All of you who really want to believe that it's really about the fact that they dominated the whole island for about 22 years are fooling yourselves!

The reality of this issue is that what we see is what we learn! We were taught (in many ways) that white is better and it stuck. Look, things here in the states might have changed a lot but deep inside most white folks still feel superior to those of color. Am I lying? You all know that I'm telling the truth. Let me be honest, I know that racism is wrong and that God didn't make white superior to black but sometimes I feel like I have a little racism inside of me too and I'm not even white. I have the tone of Fernandito Villalona or somewhat. Now, my point is that we have to come to the truth to be able to come to a solution. If we don't see the problem we will never get down to repairing it, period.

Let me add a little fun to this :))

This is my take>>>>>>> You have some sort of racism inside you if:

1) You think that building a wall to keep Hatians out is a good idea.

2) You wish an earthquake would split the two into two separate nations.

3) You hope that more white people will immigrate to the DR to keep it from being all black.

4) You hope that somehow all the Hatians can be taken back to Africa and DR be the whole Island.

AND MY FAVORITE

5) You are as black as it gets and you would die trying to prove to people that you're really indian or that you are really that color because you were under the sun for too long!

It's too funny sometimes, is it not?

I still love my Dominican people:)

Viva my patria!!!

Wow you got my point exactly I was beginning to believe that my(SPELLING)was so bad that no one
was able to understand me. Yes we all have some form of racist inclination, at some point in time or another the truth is that those who can accept that are able to change it!! The ones that put
their head in the sand and says "not me are just
fools no matter how versed they beleive they are
about things". I can't read minds the only observation that I can make is what I see as
expressed by others.

Let me give you an example if the DR was being
over run by Cubans what do you think the response would be?

DR_Defeder thanks for taking the time to use your
brain to successfully see the underlying point that I was trying to make (YOU ARE WAY AHEAD OF YOUR CLASS).

Sorry Issac & Dr_def

I don't have a racist bone in my body......I remember sitting in a hospital in Canada with my son's life in the hands of a Dr. that I had never met and a nurse coming to talk to me to "prepare" me for the fact that the specialist was "coloured". I felt so sorry for her....after beating around the bush for 15 min. she finally blurted out:" Do you mind the Dr ***** is black?" I asked her if he was the best Dr the hospital had. She said yes!!! I told her I didn't care if he was purple with pink polka-dots....if he was the BEST that's who I wanted!!! She was shocked at my response!!
Don't you think it would be great if everyone was pink with purple polka-dots????

Why not suggest if Haiti was spanish?

If haiti was spanish and shared the same culture, dominicans would be far more open to them.... Fact is they are French and have a agricultural tradition as compared to Spanish with a cattle ranching tradition...

Color has something to do with it, but not nearly as much as is being suggested.

Here it goes...

If Haiti was a white nation and it was as poor as it is today, then they would still not be liked in the DR. FYI...Once upon a time Puerto Ricans used to come by Yola to the DR looking for work, because they were much poorer. Back then, they were not very well liked in the DR.
Another thing is that I really doubt that Haiti would be as poor if they were a white nation. Help from the US, Canada, and Europe, I bet, would more forthcoming.
I think race has little to do in the DR-Haiti case. The hatred comes from the fact that Haiti occupied the DR for 22 years, and even though that happened long time ago, there's still remmnants of that resentment. It is the same reason why a lot of people in the DR don't like Gringos either, but they can at least stand them, mostly for economic reasons.
Now...IF we at least shared the same culture and language it would definitely be easier to assimilate them. So the bottom line is this...If Haiti was at the same level economically as the DR or better off, we would dislike them less...We would still not love them (just like the US)...Yes...racism does exist everywhere, but the DR is light years ahead of other countries about this. I would say most people are more classists then racists.
So...what do we do? Unfortunately Haiti is like that family member we all have, that's all screwed up, and you just want to tell him/her "Get your act together for god's sake!!!", but in the end they're family, so you can't divorce them, so you have to help them. It is in our interest to have an economically sound, stable Haiti, so the dominican government should try to influence as much as we can what happens in Haiti's politics. We should still exercise our right to deport all the beggars back to Haiti, just like any other nation does. We need to resolve the issue of haitian kids born in the DR. Are they Dominicans or Haitians?
My two cents...

Suarezn thanks for helping a novice like me understand

I am amazed at the number of persons who are able to explain their position in a non inflammatory
and by the way well thought out manner you make a good point I think there is a passage in the bible which asks"Am I my brothers keeper" for better or
worse Haiti is the DR's BROTHER AND OR SISTER.

The DR has a responsibility to help out its poorer
neighbor just like the US has a responsibility to
help out the poorer DR.
