High investor interest at Fitur shows DR tourism is hot
Tourism Minister Francisco Javier García remarked during the International Tourism Fair (Fitur) in Madrid, Spain that it was the trade show when he had held the most meetings with investors. He estimated hearing proposals for an additional 20,000 hotel rooms, or around 25% the local hotel inventory. Among the projects is a Spanish investor interested in building 9,000 hotel rooms in the Bahia de las Aguilas area in Pedernales, in the southwest.

“The truth is that the Dominican Republic is at a spectacular moment,” he said during a press conference. He said the investors are attracted by the investment climate.

He announced renewing the agreement with Iberia Airlines for tourism promotion for the country through their publications, such as the Ronda flight magazine and social media. Last year, Iberia named one of their transatlantic flying airplanes, an A330-200, Santo Domingo to honor the Dominican capital city.

García observed that travel from Europe to the country was up 13.7% in 2017. Spanish tourist air arrivals were up 5% in 2017 compared to 2016. “We continue to be the leading long haul market in the Caribbean.

Worldclass fishing off Casa de Campo waters
The Billfish Report is counting down its Top 10 Billfisheries of the Year, with Casa de Campo ranked 6th. More than 9,000 Billfish Reports were submitted to the portal in 2017 from around the world. Criteria for the Top 10 include fish numbers, variety of billfish species, reports, average size of fish, length of season and number of boats fishing. The report focuses on outstanding catch of sailfish, swordfish and blue marlin.

The Billfish Report on fishing in La Romana states:
La Romana, Dominican Republic – Some of the best blue marlin fishing in the Atlantic. Only one other fishery can match it in numbers in the Caribbean. Perhaps one of the most reliable bites in our sport. It seems every year, we cross the new year and then the blue marlin start to feed off the waters of the southern Dominican Republic. We have always contended that this is a nursery for these smaller sized blue marlin, leaving us wondering where mama is. What they lack in size, they may up for in numbers.”

PGA Tour: cash prizes for US$3 million
Corales Puntacana Resort & Club and its Corales Golf Club are hosting the Professional Golfers’ Association of America (PGA) this spring. The event will take place from 19 to 25 March 2018.

An estimated 132 professional players will play to earn points for the FedExCup, a 49-tournament schedule that includes nine tournaments in eight countries outside the United States. The PGA Tour event is a step up from the Web.com Tour played for two years in Punta Cana.

The 18-hole Corales golf coruse was designed by Tom Fazio and opened in 2010. It includes six Caribbean seaside holes as part of the design that runs along natural cliffs, bays, sea coves and the inland lakes and coralina quarries. Highlight of the course is playing the Devil’s Elbow, Corales’s last three holes. The Devil’s Elbow features the striking eighteenth hole with a dramatic forced carry over the cliff-lined Bay of Corales.

New in Casa de Campo: Minitas Beach Club and Restaurant
Located right on Minitas Beach, the new beach club and restaurant makes the beach-going experience in La Romana’s Casa de Campo better still. A multi-million dollar investment created tropical style settings so that visitors can fully enjoy the Caribbean Sea views from many angles.

The minimalist designs were created by architects Gianfranco and Nicola Fini of Studio Fini.

The new facilities include a large deck with a 23-meter infinity pool. There is a spacious bar with lounge area for guests to enjoy the sunsets. Live music is programmed.

The cuisine offered is a creative and versatile concept inspired by Mediterranean and Latin culinary traditions. There is an a la carte menu, but the beach club also caters to groups.
