My husband and I just returned from Punta Cana having stayed at the Melia Tropical resort. The resort just opened in 12/98 and is brand new. It's a beautiful facility, approximately 60 acres I believe. Although our stay was pleasant, the resort encountered SIGNIFICANT health problems amongst its guests. Guestimate was that 60% of the guests contracted nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. We, however, were unaffected. The staff was very friendly and helpful, although spoke little English.
The airport in Punta Cana leaves A LOT to be desired. It will NOT re-attract this visitor. There were oodles of people (about 2500) waiting to depart and there were only two bathroom stalls - not bathrooms, but bathroom stalls for each gender. Everything was expensive (i.e. $2.50 Diet Pepsi which I had desperately craved all week, but the resort didn't stock).
