Child Pornography and Prostitution

I want to raise my voice against child pornography and children prostitution. The recent arrest and sentencing of an Italian citizen is just one of the many cases that undergo in our society. We have sadly accepted individuals with unknown backgrounds to move into our communities, allowing them close to our children. I understand that these monsters take advantage of our friendshipness and the naiveness of many to gain the confidence of the parents and seduce these kids to the most dark and discusting behaviours. There is no race, skin color or intellectual level that would flag an individual with so malicious intents, that is why we should simply untrust anyone with our kids.

Some expats are guilty as well when they purposely cover these sick-minded monsters by not alerting the authorities or parents of the danger they represent to our kids. In their homes, they teach their own kids to not talk to strangers, but here, they even promote it.

Visiting Sosua and Boca Chica makes me nauseous. We have sold so much for a few dollars. Poor haitian kids are sent to sell themselves, it is absolutely sad. I have decided to stay away and keep my kids away from these places. It is absolutely disgusting.

Help us protect our children by reporting any threat or suspicious behavior to Conani on any of these link: http://dpsnna.net/directorio/trata-de-personas/ or http://dpsnna.net/directorio/denuncia/ or by dialing 911

Ozulloa,

I share your sentiments regarding ANYONE who exploits children or protects or looks the other way when knowing it is taking place, be it an expat or a Dominican citizen. I don't however believe that often times there is a naiveness by the parents of these children but instead a desire to capitalize off their own children. Which is more reprehensible?
I agree with you completely about not trusting your children unsupervised with other people. My children are grown now but when little they were not allowed to do "sleep overs". They did't like it at the time but understand the reasoning today.
Both the perpetrators as well as any "knowing" parent should get much more than 15 years for such crimes. I was amazed to read that this group had been active in the Caribbean since the 80's. I hope that they made more than this one arrest here in the D.R.

You make it sound as if there are dozens of Haitian children hanging around on the streets of places like Sosua waiting to be picked up as prostitutes. That's not true.

It may be possible for a determined person to find a child, but they are not visibly available enough to make anyone nauseous.

While living in Charamicos back in 2012 - 2013 there were plenty of Haitian children who went to
school there during the day and worked both the beach and bars at night. I'm glad that is no longer the case.

There used to be a yellow apartment building in Charamicos a top the first street left as you walk up
and exit the beach. This building unfortunately had older women hanging around often offering
"young girls" for a few thousand pesos to anyone willing to buy.

According to Dominicans I know in Sosua, the French Canadians and the Swiss were usually the
guilty parties when it came to this type of behaviour.

From what I understand, sometimes the parents are equally culpable for allowing, and, sometimes abetting this type of behaviour.

It is true that some parents "sell" their kids for a dollar or two. They are as guilty as the predator that looks for an opportunity to devour the inocent kid. Unfortunely our laws grant a maximum of 15 years only; that should be revised. I dream of the day when predators like this wont be allowed in my country and when our "own" predators, after paying for their deeds, would be forced to register on a website where they can be identified; nevertheless, that is just a dream.

I agree they might not stand in every corner, like prostitues do. They might not clearly offer their "services", like prostitues also do. However, I see them by the dozens, walking in our beaches, selling handcraft sourvenirs and goodies targeting the foreingner, mostly white, lonely old men. Is that a simple marketing strategy or is that what the adult behind this disgrace has instructed them?

Selling souvenirs on the beach is not the same as being a child prostitute. You are just guessing.

Living my whole life here (born and raised in Puerto Plata and living in Santo Domingo for over 10 years) allows me to have an opinion based in more than guessing.

Why did you not post this in the North Coast forum?

It is a real and current debate for the municipality of Sosua.

We know you can moderate this subject with authority.

What difference does it make wheere it's posted? The original thread is not in the North Coast.

For those that read links, post #10 link is about Sosua where many of the readers of DR1 reside or visit.

It refers as follows;

It should be a subject of significance to those that reside there.

I am sure members from the North Coast are fully capable of reading whatever new posts that are submitted , regardless of whether it is on a north coast thread or not. Perhaps if you asked " nicely " you might have got your wish.

Recently on a bus trip the video tape, after some music clips, showed nasty asian child porn.. The driver changed it immediately.. Is there a place to report stuff like that to?

It's a very serious problem and concern, especially in a country that has very liberal thinking when it comes to sexual contact, both by prostitution and in general. When you combine this and the fact that many adults and children live day to day and don't have to means to change this scenario than you have a recipe for abuse by those who will exploit others. Those who come to the DR from other countries with that specific purpose should take note that this is not tolerated in the DR and those individuals should be immediately deported, if found guilty of these crimes. It is a very hard thing to monitor, police and change public attitudes of those who don't want to deal with this problem head on.

LTSteve, i am not in agreement with you on the matter of deportation as a remedy for these events. i believe that a sentence of 30 years in La Victoria would do much more towards the curing of this problem.

Yes, jail time should be part of the equation but if the DR can send these people back to their home country to be incarcerated even better. It costs money to keep these people in jail, especially long term.

true but here don't have to buy them food, TV accommodations are a lot rougher. so cheaper to house them here than in their home countries. Instead of deporting them the home country pay for their accommodations lol
