On our first trip to the DR we will be traveling with Caribetour buses between cities. We will also use the Bavaro Express from SD to Punta Cana airport. We will have our luggage with us.

For both Caribetours and Bavaro Express, will it be sufficient if we just show up at the bus station at the day of departure and buy our tickets on the spot? Is there any need to reserve tickets in advance? Is it sufficient to be at the station an hour/half an hour earlier? Plus, our luggage will be no problem, right?

Thank you!

Caribe tour buses are quite large and I would say depending on the time of day you should have no problem boarding. Is your resort in Punta Cana? If so, why would you fly into SD?The difference in the airline fare can't be worth the inconvenience. It's a haul between these two cities. If this is the case you will probably lose the better part of day travelling back and forth each way. Have you considered renting a car? Much more convenient and not a difficult ride.

Yes your luggage can go with you fine and yes show up 1 hour ahead and you should be fine. No need to pre-book. Both bus lines use modern coaches.

If you are travelling Easter weekend you could have a bit of a wait without a pre bought seat. Any other time you should be fine.

Depend when you are coming to the DR. Next week starts "Semana Santa". Every Dominican travels at this time.
From Thursday 29th of march until Sunday 1st of April, public transportation is total chaos. You can wait for hours to get on a Bus. All the Bus Companies are selling tickets ahead only for the next bus in line.

Luggage is no problem and will be stored under the bus. Caribe give you a ticket for your luggage, but you can take hand luggage on the bus with you. Caribe is usually no issue re getting on board, you can check departure times on their website http://caribetours.com.do/ under the precios section. Bavaro Express goes less often so it is probably worth getting there an hour before departure. The buses have WiFi with the password displayed at the front of the bus. They also have a toilet at the back (but bring your own toilet paper). The buses are always freezing cold so you will need jacket or sweater and I usually take socks as well!

When it comes to where to sit, my Dominican husband says always sit on the driver's side as he won't want to die so that side gets less affected in a crash (just in case!). No idea if the statistics back that up or not.
