More precautions against diphtheria
Following the issue of an epidemiological alert by the Health Ministry after the death of a four-year old Haitian boy from presumably diphtheria, more measures have been taken to prevent the spread of the disease. The child had arrived that week from Haiti.

There has been an increase in observation protocols to detect potentially cases of diphtheria at seaports, airports and land border crossings. In addition, the Health Ministry is implementing control measures in tourist areas to try and stop anyone with diphtheria from entering the country, given the outbreaks in Haiti, Venezuela and other countries.

The population has been asked to check the status of their vaccination record and doctors warned the public to pay attention to any signs of cough, sore throats and a general feeling of being unwell.

Those working in the health sector have been advised to be vaccinated as well as those at the entry points to the country. Finally all citizens have been warned to be vaccinated against diphtheria before traveling to Haiti.

Dominican tree frog travels to the United Kingdom
A tiny tropical rainforest frog survived a trip of more than 4,000 miles to the United Kingdom, The Independent of Ireland reports. The tiny frog was found on a bunch of bananas in a Blackburn branch of Tesco Supermarket and a supermarket worker, unsure of what to do with the amphibian discovery, called the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA).

“The little tree frog was confined inside a bag of bananas so we asked the worker to make some tiny air holes in the plastic and add some water for moisture and keep him confined until we could attend,” animal collection officer John Greaves said.
“The amphibian must have had quite the shock when he emerged in a Lancashire supermarket considering he’s used to more tropical climates usually.”

Emely Peguero murder case updates
On Monday, 26 March 2018, Simón Bolívar Ureña, (El Boli), testified that Marlin Martínez pressured her son, Marlon, “solve this problem” of the pregnancy of Emely Peguero. Ms. Peguero was believed to be carrying Mr. Martinez’s child.

The judge at a San Francisco de Macoris court heard evidence and statements from El Boil against the mother and son who are accused of murdering the 16 year old teenager.
However, defense lawyer, Ricardo Reyna, said that the testimony of “El Boli”, who has made a deal with the prosecutors in order not to be charged, was actually beneficial to the defendants as he established that an abortion lead to the involuntary homicide.

Ureña also spoke to the press for the first time since he was arrested in September last year for supposed involvement in the hiding of Emely Peguero’s body.

According to his testimony, Marlin’s brother, Henry Martínez, is innocent of the charge of hiding the body and criminal association as stated by the Public Prosecution service. Martínez recently returned to the country to face any legal process.

Ureña testified that the maids who worked at the house of Marlin, Sugel Miguelina Polo and María Balbina Rodríguez Santos, who have coercive measures against them, were not involved to the crime. He went on to say that the owners and administrator of the farm where the body was hidden were also not involved.

Nevertheless, Prosecutor Regis Victorio said that despite what El Boli has said, the charges will remain against Marlin’s brother, Henry, because there is other evidence against him.

Bauger abandons Dominican Football League
Recognized as founder of the spreading of football as a sport in the Dominican Republic, the Bauger Football Club announced it will not participate in the fourth season of the Dominican Football League. The 2018 tournament begins in two weeks.

Jorge Rolando Bauger, president and founder of the Escuela de Football Jorge Bauger and the Bauger Football club, said the main reason is that as a participant in the tournament they have yet to receive a financial statement of the past tournament and are unaware of the budget for the next tournament. Bauger claims the club was not consulted regarding the decision to expand the league up to 12 teams, which he considers an error.

Bauger says it is essential that the Dominican Football League and the Dominican Football Federation be transparent in their financial management.

Jorge Allen Bauger, coach for the team during the past three years of the league, said that the players will join other teams. The Bauger operation is now at the UNPHU University in Santo Domingo.
