Legally ??

on the record w/ Migracion??

I tried to find the Pew link to determine this. Edit
For the purposes of the interactive feature, Pew estimates of the number of unauthorised immigrants living in various countries also are included in the total counts.

Here in Jarabacoa I have met several families from Colombia, several Mexicans, an Ecuadorian guy, four Nicaraguans, and various Europeans as well as the normal Americans, Canadians and Haitians.

I would have sworn there are more, or at least as many, Canadians here than Americans!

That is true regarding more Canadians on the North Coast than those from the USA. Probably far more from USA in Santo Domingo which I am guessing is the reason for the 30,000 total number from the USA versus only between 5,000 and 10,000 from Canada. There are more Americans arriving even on the North Coast of late.

Good point made about US Citizens of Dominican heritage moving back to the DR. The house next door to us was just purchased for the retirement of two Dominicans who lived in Allentown, PA and are retiring in Cabarete.

As for the odd, the DR is not a microcosm, rather it is a nexus of the odd and bizarre.

Interesting... Just checked the travel advisory from my country (gov's foreign department, North-Western Europe):

They just advice to use something against mosquitoes, no illnesses mentioned even by name, although they do mention stronger virus-based illnesses do exist and one has to take this into account, apparently 911 does not exist outside of Santo Domingo (dated March 7th), and generally the only things to worry about are not-that-safe Haitian border and petty crime.

Just advice to practice normal caution as always when traveling...

911 is even on the North Coast now, which is the last place to get things like 24/7 power, water, Fiber Optic Internet, road repaving....

There must be more Chinese and Haitian people. For example, these days, most towns have chinese people, even non touristy ones.

From 5 years ago. Not sure how accurate a Government survey would be?
SD. In the country there are 358,233 Haitians, which represents 87.3% of the immigrant population, according to the results of the First National Immigrant Survey (ENI-2013) of the Dominican Republic.

The census, carried out by the National Statistical Office, says that in the country there are 524,632 immigrants from at least 60 nations in the world living here.

After Haiti, the next ten countries which provide the most immigrants are: United States, with 13.524; Spain, 6720; Puerto Rico,4416; Italy, 4040; China, 3,643, and France, 3599.

Also in the top ten are Venezuela, 3434; Cuba, 3145; Colombia, 2738; and Germany with 1792. The majority of these immigrants live in urban areas.

Men represent 64%, in the majority Haitians, and 35.6% are women. The study covered 68,000 housing units and inhabited places where 13,449 interviews were conducted.

The results of the survey, carried between 31 July and 30 September 2012, were released yesterday during an activity held in the Green Hall of the Presidential Palace, headed by the Minister of Economy, Planning and Development, Temistocles Montas.

Chinese move everywhere and are creative. They find ways to move suitcases full of cash out of China.
