I recently filled out the application I-130 to bring my step-son to the United States since I am a US citizen I can bring the child faster than my husband who only has a permanent resident card. I was informed by a co-worker that although the mother gives authorization for us to bring her son to the US and get the permission from Dominican Republic for the child it's only valid for 30 days that we would need to gain custody of the child so he can live with my husband and myself. I would like to know if this is true. What is the point of filing out the Form I-130 to bring the child if you need to gain custody?
