JetBlue to fly Fort Lauderdale (FLL) to Santiago (STI)
Beginning 1 June 2018, JetBlue starts nonstop service between Fort Lauderdale International Airport (FLL) and Santiago’s Cibao International Airport (STI). The carrier will offer one daily round-trip flight on 150-seat Airbus A320 aircraft.
The flight is in time for peak summer travel. It is JetBlue’s fifth route from Santiago.

The Fort Lauderdale new route bolsters JetBlue’s presence as the leading carrier in the Dominican Republic. The airline flies from the United States airports to La Romana, Puerto Plata, Punta Cana and Santiago international airports.

The airline on 3 May 2018 began another new flight, the Santo Domingo (SDQ) to Newark (EWR) nonstop flight.

Flycana promotes itself as country’s first low cost carrier
Announcing its plans to start flying this 2018, Victor Miguel Pacheco says that Flycana is born from the transformation of the Dominican airline in formation, Dominican Wings. The airline has an advantage. One of the partners of the airline is Viva Air (Viva Colombia, Viva Peru) founder William Shaw. Shaw has stepped down from the leadership at the airline company, leaving as president Declan Ryan, son of Ryanair co-founder Tony Ryan.

In a press release, Shaw forecasts that travel to the Dominican Republic will double by 2023. He said this will be achieved by introducing low cost fares and opening more direct routes to save money and time to passengers. He said Flycana would be introducing fares of US$49 on travel to New York.

The company is still working on its departure airports in the Dominican Republic.

Two million Chinese tourists by 2022?
The director of the Civil Aviation Board (JAC) in the Dominican Republic, Luis Ernesto Camilo García is optimistic the soon-to-be-signed aviation agreement between the Dominican Republic and the People’s Republic of China could result in an annual flow of two million Chinese travelers to the Dominican Republic by 2022. Around 31 million Chinese tourists traveled to North America in 2017 of around 125 million Chinese tourists.

Among the agreements contemplated is the eliminating of visas and other facilities for Chinese traveling to the Dominican Republic.
