Let's see, spellcheckers that make online calls tend to slow the board down when you post. I'm going to get the other mods out the way then I will look at the spell checker. Maybe make it so people can turn it on or off.

DSL vrs cable

I just went thru DSL hell . First I called earthlink for DSL .They go to Bell and ask them if its possible and if yes, they send you the DSL modem. Naturally it
does not work and Bell has to come and fix the connection. It worked pretty good for a week.
Then Bell cut the service and I had to find out thru earthlink (elevator musik while waiting for at least 20 min each time) .

Now Bell calls me and offers a DSL modem directly to me!?

But in the meantime I ordered a cable modem from ATT.
Now I'm a happy camper.
It' s lightning fast for down loading and since I don't do much up loading
this setup is ideal for me.
No connecting and disconnecting either. You are always connected.

Also no more elevator musik there is no waiting for the next available operator.
Go Cable!!! X

PS cost is same for both about 50 bucks a month and free installation.

I have a cable modem and I like it. DSL in my area is about 10 bux less a month. I opted for the Cable because when I moved I just put in Cable and not a Telephone. I use my cell phone and cable tv and internet. Turned out cheaper for the package of utilities I need and want.

jazzcom / x man

What are the download / upload speeds of both systems? I am also interested in upload speed as I plan on connecting a webcam to talk to my friends. DSL is the only choice i have in santiago. Please give actual clocked speed of systems.
Thanks.

DSL

AZB, Without going into details normal home DSL gets you up to 1.5 mega
bits per second each direction. (500 to 600 KB/s is more realistic)
Much higher data rates are possible
on special DSL connections. But don't worry about that.
To download a typical homepage with graphics on it would take about
15 seconds with a dial up modem and about 1 to 3 seconds with
a typical DSL modem.
If you had a say 10MB/S DSL you would not be
much faster either since you now run into browser and computer speed
limitations.

Upload speeds for Cable are unpredictable but should be at least
twice as fast as dial up modem.

This whole thing is changing soo fast. I remember 5 years ago I was
designing ISDN chips the ultimate in data rate 64KB/s . Who cares
about it now?? X

Thanks x man. The internet flash by codetel promises you 256kbps / sec but i had clocked a download speed no greater than 56 kbps / sec. It was still super fast as compared to my dial up. Lets wait and see what the future has in its stock for us.

Note please.....

I am way out of my depth on this one but I connect quite often at 115.2kbps on my dial-up and download at close to this limit. Can't tell you about up-loading as I haven't done any!

In a nut shell, that's impossible on a dial-up. Also those little flashing green icons that you see in your task bar that show your connected to the Internet are also worthless. Most people on a dial-up in the DR get around 10-15k/sec and that's on a very good clean connection. On average it's closer to 4-5k/sec.

About the best site to test your connection speed is http://www.dslreports.com/tools

I'm on a Plan 2 DSL connection with Codetel.
Right now I'm getting what you see below, but that can change and often does.

2002-05-12 21:53:37 EST: 303 / 236
Your download speed : 303499 bps, or 303 kbps.
A 37 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 236336 bps, or 236 kbps.

On another note....

The forum changes will not kick in 100% until tomorrow night.
Have a million things to do and basically run out of time tonight.
