hello

I really need some advice on the dominican . I am looking to book a honeymoon for next year and D.R is at the top of my list. I know that it has two sides the carribean and the atlantic. Please forgive my ignorance (I was terrible at geography) But on the atlantic side because it is that sea wouldn't the water be colder than usual?? I guess what i am asking is which is best to be at and where will the water be warmest. If we do go to the atlantic side will i freeze my toes off before i even get to the water???

I have a strong phobia towards cold water and want this honeymoon to be the most perfect experience of my life. Both my fiancee and I love the idea of white sands and clear water but are also looking forward to the water sports etc....

Also are the people freindly. I know in other parts of the carribean you have to be careful when travelling around. Is this the case with the dominican republic??

Any other advice would be fantastic and i look forward to all your help!!

Thanks so much

Paul

Punta Cana

Take her to PC, beautiful white sands for miles, crystal clear waters and a degree or so warmer than the Atlantic side. Many water sports available at any of the resorts. Travel around wherever you want but always use caution, never flash a lot of diamonds and jewels anywhere in the world. You will enjoy an honeymoon in the DR whether it is north, east or south coast but my preference for quiet unencumbered ambiance and romantic spots would be Punta Cana.
Enjoy

Warm water

Paul

from my limited experience in the DR (I did make it to the North and South though), you will likely be looking for some "cooler" ocean water to feel refreshed. All the water around the island is very warm

As for the people, unless they kept the rude ones hidden, I found everyone to be delightfully cheerful and polite

Congratulations !

Best wishes for a long and happy life together.
The Carribean side of the island definitely has warmer water if that is your main concern. The sea is also calmer than the Atlantic ocean so the waves will not be as high and many if not most of the beaches on the south, east and western beaches are protected by reefs.
"Wud" is correct when he says the beaches in the Punta Cana/Bavaro area are gorgeous.
However Jim Hinch would be the first to tell you how breathtaking the beach at Boca Chica is. He's posted pic's several times on the board so an archive search will give you a look and a link to a website with more info.
If you like a more secluded resort, Santana Beach Resort & Casino outside San Pedro is quite nice. Good beach, good food and a little off the beaten path.
La Cappella and Coral Costa Caribe in Juan Dolio are five star resorts in a small village so if you'd like to get out and see some things would be an excellant choice.
Check out the Travel section of this board. There are reviews and also a Link to Debbie's Travel Page which also has many reviews.
Some of the resorts do offer "honeymoon" packages so be sure to ask your travel agent about them.
Here is a URL that has quite a comprhensive listing and descriptions of many of the resorts in the Punta Cana/Bavaro area.

Again, congratulations and have a wonderful wedding and a fabulous honeymoon!!

I am going to be a little bolder

If you want a perfect honeymoon, why not rent a luxury villa?

Get in touch will Ellen Burr at: aliveandwellinthedr@hotmail.com

She used to have a wonderful site called dominicanluxuryvillas but some illness in the family has curtailed her activities. I am sure that she would be glad to help you.

There are some extraordinary places along the whole coast line.

Punta Ruc?a, Cabrera, Casa de Campo, Saman?...the list is endless, almost. And no cold water, anywhere!

Good luck and when is the Big Event?

In my opinion there are no health risks, no need for malaria pills, etc. Except that you can't drink the water. Or eat unwashed fruit and vegetables, etc.

But check the archives here on this board, do a search on malaria or any other ailment, there has been lots of discussion about this!

If you are on the south or east coasts....

Do try to take the trips to Saona Island and Catalina Island. They're a fun filled day and the beaches are undescribable!
The coral garden at Catalina are great places to snorkel and on the boat ride to Saona you may get lucky and see dolphins as we have on several occasions.
Alto de Chavron is worth a peek to as are the excursions into Santo Domingo to see the many sights there and maybe disco during the evening at Guacara Taino!
Some people enjoy the jeep safari's (too rough for my poor back but I hear they're fun!!).
Lots to see and do.......
