An era has ended. Balaguer is dead. Whether or not one agreed with his policies and practices, there is no doubt that he was a towering figure in the history of the Dominican Republic.

What will happen to the PRSC? I'm sure the phone lines are humming today between key figures in the party, as well as among leaders of the other major parties.

Balaguer is dead. Balaguer, Bosh, Pena Gomez,...the dinosaurs of DR politics are gone, but is the new breed much better? I think not. Without the absolute power that these icons enjoyed and used steering the ship of state, the political process will drift further awash in a sea of corruption, greed and personal gain. What we are seeing today is just the beginning of a new era of "politics as unusual."

creepy

I was in the chat room last night and everyone was talking about Balaguer and we were trying to figure out how old he was...and he dies hours later.
