US Airways Seeks DOT Approval to Serve Three Additional Dominican Republic Routes From Charlotte/Philadelphia


ARLINGTON, Va., Aug. 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- US Airways has filed an application with the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) for route authority to operate new nonstop roundtrip service to three additional key leisure destinations in the Dominican Republic -- La Romana, Punta Cana, and Puerto Plata. These new flights will complement US Airways' existing service between Philadelphia and Santo Domingo.

Subject to U.S. and foreign government approvals, Puerto Plata and La Romana initially will be served from Philadelphia, and Punta Cana will be served from both Charlotte and Philadelphia. These new flights will operate year round and will begin as early as November 2002.

Initially, US Airways will offer three roundtrip flights each week to Puerto Plata, two roundtrip flights to La Romana, and six roundtrip flights per week (four from Charlotte and two from Philadelphia) to Punta Cana.

Service on each of these routes will be flown using US Airways' modern 142-seat Airbus A-320 aircraft.

"With the addition of these new destinations, we continue to expand our rapidly growing presence in the Caribbean and with substantial travel benefits not only for our Charlotte and Philadelphia customers, but in numerous communities on our route network," said US Airways Vice President - International Douglas Leo. "Also, business and leisure travelers in these three cities will benefit from our new service, and will have convenient access to a wider range of destinations in the U.S., Canada and Europe."

US Airways will add flights between Charlotte and Providenciales in the Turks and Caicos starting Nov. 2, and between Charlotte and Belize on Nov. 9, each with four flights weekly. New weekly flights also will be added from Philadelphia to St. Kitts beginning Dec. 7, and from Philadelphia to Grenada on Dec. 21. Belize and Grenada are subject to foreign government approval. US Airways also will introduce Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport- Nassau service on Nov. 2, subject to government approval.

US Airways currently serves the following 16 Caribbean destinations: Antigua, Aruba, Barbados, Bermuda, Cancun, Cozumel, Grand Bahama Island, Grand Cayman, Montego Bay, Nassau, San Juan, Santo Domingo, St. Croix, St. Lucia, St. Thomas and St. Maarten. US Airways Express also serves North Eleuthera, Governors Harbour, Marsh Harbour and Treasure Cay from Florida.
