Okay - how do you guys post all those great pictures/images/smileys or whatever they're called with your posts??

Learn html and you are off to the races, it is a combination of many things cut and paste a code from a smiley site or learn how to load your own website with animated gif's and do a hyper protocol transfer. All this stuff can be complicated but is easy when you get the hang of it.

Like This For Example.

I inserted the metatag (right click on the graphic, view the properties and copy that) from HB's post.

Has to go between the <_imgsrc=" tag [note:without the _ shown here to the right of the first <] then it ends with > and the location of the image is shown in quotation marks, e.g. " ".

It doesn't have to be that difficult, there are programs available that do the work for you.

Hot-linking images.

When you post an image like the one's above, your actually hot-linking from another site. Every time the image loads, your using their bandwidth. Basically your costing that webmaster/company money. Although this can be prevented at the server level, most webmasters do not have the knowledge to stop it, so end up paying for bandwidth that's not associated directly with their site.

Bottom line, it's not something I support.

Rob, if it costs the webmaster of the other site bandwidth/money, I don't understand why there are so many websites offering free smilies and gifs. The purpose of those sites is to provide images for all who want to use them.

In the hope that people download them and use them on their own sites and web space and do not hot link.

This is the reason Geocities banned hot linking, it was costing them a fortune in bandwidth.

At the end of the day, someone has to pay for the hot linked images. In 95% of cases, it's the webmaster, often because he doesn't know any better or doesn't have the skills to stop people doing it.

You may be right, your knowledge of website operation, etc., is much greater than mine. But there are many sites that seem to believe that people will do more with the smilies and gifs than add spice to their own websites. There are websites, for example, offering large numbers of smilies and information on how to use them on message boards.

With respect to Geocities, when I go to some of those websites the program I have to monitor cookies asks me if I want to accept a cookie from Geocities.

At least there is one thing Robert cannot hold a grudge against AZB and myself.
