Fishing in the DR

I have some friends who would like to surf fish off of Punta Cana. I think they would likely only catch a mess of yellowtail, maybe the the odd red snapper but who knows.
Can anyone tell me if there are any licenses required or restrictions in the DR.<br>

Hi 'wud,
No licenses are required that I'm aware of. Unless your friends can find some close-in reefs that the Dominican fishermen have missed, surf fishing is kinda' slim. Their best bet is to charter a boat in Bavaro and go sportfishing. Maybe someone offers a bottom fishing trip. Have them look for Herman the German and his boat, the "Lovely Linda." Tell him that I sent them.

The Surf-Fishing in the DR is excellent if you know what you are doing!
Snook(Robalo), tarpon, jacks, Bonito, Baracuda and various snappers can be had!

Tony C:
I have surf fished Cuba and Florida many times and know about the snook, tarpon and bonefish, not interested in the cuda.
I may try the surf off Bavaro beach in January in the early morning before the tourists hit the beach. Might be some fun.

If you are in North Punta Cana area...there is a small river (seems like its name is Maimon...but don't quote me on that...just that it does exist) that enters the ocean at the north end. Anyway...can push out a decent volume of water....have sport fished this area and have done extremely well fairly close to the beach. Problem is we always got there by boat and I can't remember if there was easy access in via car although I know some of the "jungle" trips via 4 wheelers go in this area.

I will look on one of my nautical maps and see if I can be more specific for you.

Best, Dave
