(Trinidad) BWIA to spread wings in 2003 ? Valley.
Financially troubled BWIA is expected to introduce flights to Cuba in January, 2003, to Santo Domingo in February and to Costa Rica by March, Trade and Industry Minister Ken Valley disclosed yesterday.
Valley said the new flights will be part of Government?s thrust to have T&T selected as the secretariat of the Free Trade Agreement of the Americas.
Valley said this venture is part of the process to ensure FTAA delegates enjoy easy access to T&T from Latin America.
Earlier this month, Government agreed to loan BWIA US$13 million in bid to keep it in the air.
He also said T&T is expected to benefit from a programme designed to eliminate the development gap between smaller economies and larger FTAA member states.
Valley, who attended the seventh FTAA Ministerial meeting in Quito, Ecuador, earlier this month, said assistance will be rendered to smaller island states through ?a mix of technical assistance and financial grants?.
Valley said Government?s bid to have the FTAA secretariat set up in T&T will benefit the country which will ?undoubtedly enjoy additional foreign exchange inflows?.
