Well hello again DR1!
I am back here at my desk in Tampa, wishing I could press rewind and take life back a few days.
I had a test here at work Wednesday and had to show my face in the office. So I sat here for as long as I could trying to mask my excitement so my co-workers wouldn't notice me slip out early.
I wanted to do some more shopping before my plane left at 5. Too much traffic to get anything done and I kept forgetting things at my apartment so I just went to the airport.
I got to the DR about 10:30. The girl at customs was flirting with me which was a good sign. It's funny how I find it hard to hold a normal converstation in spanish at times but when it comes to flirting it seems to flow a little better.
There was a big group of people waiting in the airport and I hadn't talked to Mayra or Iveli all day so I wasn't sure if they would be there or not, so I was walking around looking like damn idiot while they stood somewhere laughing at me of course.
I turned around and there was Mayra, as tall as ever and still beautiful of course. Her cousin drives a taxi so he drove us around. I didn't stay in a big hotel or anything Mayra found one near Hotel Tropicana, calle Hotel Victor, and we stayed there for cheap. That's cool with me though I don't need a lot. We didn't do much that night just got something to eat. Mayra has been complaining of stomach pains for a little while now and she was feeling bad. I've been worried about her. Her cousin was supposed to pick us up early the next day but many of you know how timing is there, he didn't show up until like 9:00 that night.
That is why I missed the get together. I am sorry I've read some of the posts and it sounds like you had a lot of fun. Maybe next time, right. As far as the Maricon comment goes CRIS... there are far too many Dominicanas on the island.
We spent Thursday night at her cousins house, I was greeted with smiles and handshakes. It was good for all of us to match faces with voices from the telephone. We sat in chairs in the street listening to music blarring from houses in the neighborhood.
The traffic there is hilarious, and I smiled and thought about something I read here the other day about using the horn, he blew the horn at cars, motorcycles, birds, trash, he used it for everything. It wasn't even a normal horn it sounds like a car alarm. Everytime we went somewhere we started of with a normal load, 3 or 4 people you know, but it doubled everytime. Then there are the 4 ft deep pot holes, and the 3 ft high speed bumps to manuver over with the weight of so many of us leaving about 3 inches between the car and the ground! I am surprised I can hear anything today because he had 4 speakers across the back hooked up to an amp that was normally loud but got even louder depending on how much he liked the song.
We got some chicken from a place called provokon, across the street from the big movie theatre. It was pretty good, but we couldn't finish it all.
Friday we went shopping, I forget the name of the place but Mayra told me it was more that 500 yrs old. I had my video camera so we filmed a lot, they commenting how beautiful the country is, I agreed. There were some guys with black paint on playing drums down the middle of the street, I don't know what it symblolized or anything though. We went to Orange and got a cell phone for Mayra of course.
She gave me a gift that I gave her for Valentines and acted like she had really picked it out or something, it was so funny to me I'm still laughing about it. They insisted that I buy something from there, they wanted me to get shoes from Payless, but I told them that I have Payless here and I don't want to come back with a lot of stuff, but they kept trying. I did get a bottle of Mama Juana though. We ate in town, there was a little kid asking for change and stuff so we gave him some. One of the waitresses was kicking him out but he wrestled with her a little bit, it made me sad of course.
Friday night we went her cousins house again, I sat in the street and drank two glasses of Mama Juana with the cousin they call "Prieto" Then we went to a club called O'Side with a big gladiator standing in front of it. It was packed so we had to find somewhere to stand. I drank Presidente with Iveli and her brother, Mayra can't drink because of her stomach. She was feeling bad so I danced with Iveli but I think she didn't want to dance with me because I can't dance salsa that well, just the basic steps. I danced with Iveli though and we all had fun.
Saturday we took a long, long drive to San Juan. Stopped mid-way at Pollo Rey for something to eat then continued on to Mayra's neighborhood " el campo". There were coming up to the car to sell things everytime we came up to a speed bump. I got some shrimp in a little plastic bag. I thought it needed to be cooked until Mayra looked at me funny and said "comelo". It was good though.
Mayra was ashamed of the neighborhood and told Iveli to turn the camera off. We stopped so I could see Nelis, another cousin I hadn't seen in a while. I met her daughter and mother as well. There were two little boys running around naked, one had a sore or something on his "deedle-doodle" . Everybody gathered around to watch as an uncle cleaned it of with water for him. All I could think about was how terrible that must be.
I met Mayra's parents and her son Manoli. I didn't talk much around her family though. They speak to fast for me and I don't want to sound stupid so I say nothing. Mayra doesn't speak English but I can talk to her because she slows down for me. I sat on the porch with her father but we didn't talk, I didn't know what to say. The kids looked at me as she distributed things I had brought for them.
I always wondered why a lot of dominican girls don't know how to turn on the shower, now I know. I took a bath with the coldest water in the world, using abar of soap and a tin can to pour water on myself, talk about shrinkage!
We went to this place called El Coucho to sit and drink Presidente, for a few hours. Then we went to the center of town and walked around listening to music taking pictures and talking. Everytime the girls went away one of the male cousins would say " muchas mujeres aqui" my response: "si" and that would be the end of it. I didn't know if it was a test or not, and if so which answer would I need to pass? To agree with a big grin and elaborate proving that I was a cool guy or would that cast a bad shadow on my character and the way I treat their cousin. If I act uninterested would they think I was soft or something? Oh well I think I did what is best, agree and buy him another beer.
I spent the night on one of those cabanas. It had a round bed with hardly any cover, mirrors on the wall and ceiling, a T.V. with porn on it, a condom and two pieces of candy LOL.
Sunday morning was the long trip back to the Capitol. We got back to the hotel took and took a nap. Primo came for us and we went to club La Fortuna. It was packed as well but we eventually found a table and got some beer in our systems. We danced and wathched others dance. There was a guy there mixing merenge and salsa with Michael Jackson and everybody was looking and smiling. Then the floor cleared and a man with his left arm and leg missing "danced". He did more with one leg and one arm that a lot of us do with two! He had a lady come up and bend over a chair he got behind her and worked it. It was a lot of fun and people gave him tips.
I was sad to leave Monday but we said our good-byes. I had to spend the night in Miami because the plane left Santo Domingo late. And now I'm back here at may desk.

I am glad I got the chance to visit, sad because I didn't get to meet you guys though. I really wanted to be there, especially for you MQ. My report isn't as good as some of the others but it's hard to put everything into words. I can't wait to come back.
