Nasty rumors going around

...that a bank that spends as much money in ads as it has money lent to this government in trouble, has problems of its own firing many employees and closing departments due to shaky financial foundation.

...that another foreign North American bank has not given a pay increase to its employees in 3 years and may close its DR operations.

...that Hippo is so desperate and devastated by Leonel Fernandez' rise in the polls and the danger of the PRD losing power in 2004 that he has now accepted the proposal from his PPH reelection hawks to put Leonel in jail for fraud gambling on the possibility that this may slow the Lion down.

...On the other hand, Leonel has a strategy ready which will explode in Hippo's face with a series of documents about Pepegate and other important fraud cases committed by Hippo's group.

...that major scandals are coming in Santo Domingo's city hall at the hands of Johnny Ventura's administration, where days before he left office many shenanigans took place.

...that the dollar's downslide is just another trick by powerful government connected people to bring it down to its knees and then buy every dollar on the streets again and fool the Dominican people one more time. Those who held their ground will not suffer. Those who gamble will lose.

...that the Euro is the most dangerous currency to play games with. Stay away from it or get burned. Too many scoundrels are now speculating with it. This is for major league insiders only.

...that hardly anyone is buying real estate in DR. If you got cash on hand negotiate hard. Developers are desperate. Those who have not finished their projects are almost ready to take boats to Canal de La Mona. Those who have are sitting on tax and maintenance-eating monsters with few takers. Specially those over $3,000,000 pesos.

...that George Bush kicked his desk very hard the other day because of the state department's erroneous decision to support Mexico for the National Security seat at the United Nations, instead of supporting DR(and Hippo), who would have been a cheaper and easier to manage ally than Mexico's two faced President Fox. Hippo's supposed anti-war stand could easily change to war hawk with a few millions, unlike Mexico's demands to get everything including running the INS themselves in exchange for helping Bush with the UN vote.

...That the next bomb Hippo is going to detonate on Dominicans is an increase in the ITBIS and huge increases in water bills to pay off loans for aqueducts being built and to be built for election time.

...that zinc roofing, nails, wood and paint will be found cheap all over by year end because Hippo's PPH boys will be giving out zillions for electioneering and patronage. So these products, like vegetables, will be sold in the black market by government officials and low level operators in charge of distribution of these items for the poor. Right now there are thiefs with trucks selling food destined for the poor in all neighborhoods. These are PRD party members who are turning very rich with government food.

...that the greatest scandal ever in this nation is not Pepegate, PEME or any other scandal. The winner is Plan Renove which will cause more riots among public transport unions fighting over these vehicles, most of which have landed in public officials' hands. Tha San Cristobal riot was just a warm up for the spring and summer.

...that prices will not go down for any items because of ther dollar slide. On the contrary, prices will go up much more as soon as our "winning" F-16's and Stealths start bombing Saddam's ridiculous looking palaces and soap making factories. Hippo is ready to blame everything on Bush, not on his chacabana.

...that the police is so demoralized that not a man in grey uniform has been seen for weeks on the streets. Most policemen are moonlighting or mugging people themselves. There is a woman killing spree by policemen and army personnel disgusted with their lives, while their generals are all becoming millionaires. Most people now believe the drug, alien, and smuggling traffic belongs to the uniforms. The only visual uniforms are AMETS, who have now instructions not to ticket anybody unless you show them the finger. Politics as usual. Have you noticed you can drive around freely without the stickers? Who cares?

...that conchos are so expensive that the luxury air-conditioned OMSA buses now have standing room at times.

...that Hippo and his government will be deeply embarrassed when they star losing one by one every legal case against the opposition and media people accused of libel. Martinez Pozo will win hands down and embarrass Hippo and his top allies badly.

Very funny, especially the part about running the INS. And very true. A few Lincoln Navigators would have won The Hippos vote.

Here is another interesting twist

Is there anyone on this board connected with Banco Popular or who knows about its policies and decisions and answer these for me? I do not intent with this to throw dirt at BP, or to suggest this is one of the banks I mentioned before. But I am just wondering why?

-BP just came out of nowhere with a new change of image. Was it a response to its smaller rivals who have stolen the thunder with catchy new campaigns, like Bancredito, BHD and Nova Scotia?

-Was this image change planned or just a reaction?

The reason I find this so unusual is the fact that although internal changes were implemented to show a change of strategy for the future, some of the superficial aspects have not come out so well. For instance, the new logo is just a change of color. The new logos that replaced the old ones appear to be hand painted in cheap materials and have been placed over the old logos without removing the old tracks from the previous signs. In some bank branches, both signs can be seen, one overlapping the other. BP apparently rushed to this and did not order paint to cover up the old stuff.

Yet, they spent a great deal of money to supply things with the new logo that are less visible and wane with the time, such as mouse pads for computers, T-shirts, pens and baseball type caps for all the employees. The unfortunate part of this is that as you walk around malls and streets you see employees wearing these caps with raggedy clothes and most of the ones wearing them are chopos who give a bad image to the bank.(The caps are white. Bad news since white is Hippo's color)

The new brochures seem to have been rushed and are not that catchy. Granted, BHD had some of the same problems with its signs because they made two changes too quickly. However, all their new buildings were renovated quickly and modernized with new furniture and even new ashtrays.

Perhaps the best model for a BP branch is the one in the Bella Vista Mall. This is what they have to do with the rest.

Uhhh, Tongo: Please remember that don Alejandro is a major PRD backer??? And I mean MAJOR??

These are interesting items, and I think that they bear watching in the next few weeks.

A guy I know in the news business says that if Leonel goes to jail, Hippo won't last 48 hours after August 15, 2004. It seems that is a major reason that PPH wants him to go for another four??

thanks again for the interesting series of things to watch develop
