I highly recomend the Outback Jeep Safari. You can register through your tourist guide once you get to the DR, or check out www.debbiesdominicantravel.com
She's got lots of reviews and links to different hotels and tours to go on. The Outback picked us up from our hotel on a Friday morning. The ride can get a little scary and it takes you into the DR country side, and NO paved roads! Thankgod it had seat belts, but maybe bring a pillow if you can ;) We were in Cabarete, so we went on the Puerto Plata tour. We got to visit a typical DR house in the countryside. The family get some money and clothes donations for letting all the tourists come into there. That was very interesting. Then we got to visit a school. The one thing they enforce is not to give any money, food or gifts to the children as that encourages begging. The tour guides said they'd happily accept donations on the school/family's behalf, or to give directly to the mother or teacher. The one thing I also really liked about the Outback, was that they give some of their proceeds to the school. We then stopped at the river Yassica for a picnic lunch and a dip in the river. The current is SUPER strong, and if ypu're not carfely, you could very well float away! They then took us to an 'exotic' school, basically snakes and lizzards, followed by a river boat tour, ending with boogie boarding on a gorgeous secluded beach. Our tour guide Little Richard was HILARIOUS!!! We also met Ruddy. R.U.D.D.Y., 'Y'? Because that is his name. And NOBODY can forget the creepy australian :) The tour costs $69US, and we thought that was WELL worth the tour. It was a fabulous day and a great way to check out the countryside of DR. It is absolutely breathtakingly beautiful.
