Easy PAK100!

You are going to set a "RECORD" for the most posts in the shortest time!!!You could have combined your 3 similar posts into one! "VIAGRA" is available everywhere, and costs between 9 & 10 $ US for a 100 mg. pill. There are "ATMs" everywhere! We have "Electricity" here now too! Cris Colon, MODERATOR

Pat,
I am sure MANY would like to help you with information about your drug availability BUT ...... as mentioned by Ken, we rather need to know where you are going to be!!! Many pharmacists in the Puerto Plata area I know because I have handed out freebees brought in by holiday makers & visitors on short stays. I know they have most medication drugs AND the generic versions in the Puerto Plata area, Santo Domingo & Santiago cities, but not in the foothills, Maimon, Manzanillo or most 'Campo' areas!!! - Grahame

Okay - I see from other posts you have done, you are coming to the Puerto Plata area!! Try the pharmacia in Calle 12 de Julio just down from Parque Luperon. It is run by Gregorio, he speaks some English & is very knowledgable on his drugs. Prescriptions are not always needed there!! Failing that, there is another good pharmacy (pharmacia San Juan) in lower Seperacion just up from the punta de gineo. The owner speaks good English too!! You can tell both of them I suggested you call - won't get me any commission or discounts unfortunately, but might get you a little better attention!!

Cirrus ATM can be found at Banco Mercantil, Banco Popular, Banco del Progresso & at Supermecado Tropical!! - Grahame

In Puerto Plata, I have had good luck at the farmacia in Centro Medico Bournigal. If they are out of what I need, they have been good to call several other farmacies to see if they have it.

ATM's ALWAYS pay out in the local currency RD $'s (pesos). The limit per day depends on which bank you use (the one outside Tropical is RD $8,000 - the one at Banco del Progresso is RD $12,000) go figure why??!! Mind you, there are occassions when you will get nothing out - because they have run out &/or just haven't been refilled!!! Go on the evening of the 15th or 30th of a month & the chances of getting money out is greatly reduced - these are PAY DAYS for Dominican workers!!!! Have sent you an e-mail, get back to me if you think I can help further. - Grahame.

For DR1'ers re: ATM's

This is what I advise new travellers to the D.R. regarding ATM usage.

Any comments?

Have I missed anything or am I inacurate in anything included?

Thanks,

Gregg

ATM's - Some Precautions
Make sure you see the same symbol on the machine as on the back of your card (Interac, Plus, Maestro, Cirrus, etc.) or the machine might not give you your card back. It is preferable to use one at a bank during open hours in case you have problems getting your card back. Avoid the 15th & 30th as more and more Dominicans get paid by direct depost and withdraw cash on those days; also the 25th as that's when government workers get paid and the machines are more likely to run out of money around those dates. Only withdraw (in pesos) what you are likely to spend in a day or two as it is difficult or impossible to convert back to other currencies.

Re: How Much

Will a DR ATM give me 10000 peso at a time ???

Maybe - was the reply from BushBaby too confusing? Since 10,000 is actually between 8,000 and 12,000 and as he pointed those were 2 specific examples of ATM limits.

Maybe just bring some traveler's cheques in US$ and skip the ATM thing totally, for a week long trip.

You will have more fun just going to the DR (and let a bit of caution take to the winds) , I assume for the first time , than doing all this research. You MUST have done enough by now, here and that other site where you are posting mostly the same questions.
