Our reservations are confirmed and our bags almost packed to begin our adventure to the Victorian House in Sosua! Many thanks to DR1 and Rob for their efforts in making this excursion available! First time I've ever won anything of real value and I'm looking forward to exploring more of the North Coast and meeting more of the DR1 "regulars".
Arrangements have been made to stop in Santiago on the trip up to visit briefly Hillbilly Hovel for lunch Saturday.
Then it's on to Sosua to settle in and meet up with Jazzcom for dinner.
After dinner Saturday night a stop at Eddy's Bar is in order and hopefully some others of the crew will be there to meet and greet both Jazz and ourselves (are you going to show AZB?).
HB is making arrangements with BushBaby for a round of golf at Playa Dorado on Sunday so we may also get to meet "She who must be Obeyed" sometime during our stay.
Suggestions will be taken from Jazz,HB,BB et al as to what we should see and where we should go while there.
Thursday morning it will be back to Santiago to meet up with HB and sample Hillbilly fare again before heading to the links at the local course. I've already warned HB that while I play golf I'm not a golfer or rather I'm a 6 par golfer on a 3 par course so we should have a few laughs on Sunday and Thursday when I demonstrate my ineptness at the game!!
Hopefully we'll also have time for a quick stop at the cigar factory either on Thursday or Friday morning before we head home to Juan Dolio. Camp David will be our overnight stop in Santiago.
So stay tuned and I'll make a full report when we arrive back at base.
If you think of it say a prayer that our little car carries us well to our destination and home as it's getting as old as I and really hasn't had anything major go wrong with it yet. Now would not be a good time to make it's age apparent!!
To quote an infamous persona "Hasta la Vista Baby!!"

Well my thoughts are to have dinner on the Beach in Cabarete so you get to see it at night. Then off to Eddys.

If anyone wants to join us Saturday night it is ok with me. I love large DR1 crowds. We can stop at the whore house on the way back to Eddys AZB so you may want to join us! LOL

I just withdrew 50, 000 US dollars from the bank in advance of having dinner with Mr. and Mrs. MommC. That of course is just to pay my own way because these people know how to spend money like no one else I have ever seen!

I am now prepared! LOL

Not really........but then again.....

we did pay $120 Euro a bottle for the several bottles of Brunello we drank at lunch that day in Florence. Can't quite remember exactly how much the lunch for 4 cost but the owner of the trattoria gave us a bottle of Brunello on the house!! :)
For dinner that night we settled for a few bottles of Vino Nobili di Montipulciano and one Brunello (I think we cleaned out his cantina of all the "good" stuff!).
Think we'll find any drinkable wine in Cabarete???

Well BB I may know how to spend but......

I NEVER gamble especially since as I've said I'm a 6 par golfer on a par 3 course! So ya don't even have to guess who'd be paying up every hole :)
Now Hubby might take you up on a few holes.......but he's relatively new to the game to so I can't speak for him.
We're actually hoping you and HB can teach us a thing or two ;)
Looking forward to it so we'll see you there. 10 AM sounds great (how's the heat up there? It's getting almost too hot for me to play here).

Guess I'd better get packing!!
See y'all soon!!

It's f. f.. f..... Frightfully hot here!!! You need to start off in decent clothes as it IS a golf club ..... but br prepared to get indecent as soon as we are out of sight of the clubhouse!!! Bring a good insect repelent for holes 13 - 17 & an extra glove if you can! The drinks cart goes round the course, but I always take a bottle or two of ice that thaws out as we go round too!! WE WILL enjoy!!! - Grahame.

Arrival and a round of Golf

Hillbilly Hovel was pleased to rceive the MommCs (Debbie and Tony) for a lunch of Dominican Flags( Beef steak in wine sauce, rice and beans, tostones and a green and red salad with balsamic vinagrette dressing) a red wine and ice cold Presidentes accompanied the meal. We had a good time eating and talking.

On Sunday we played (???) a round of golf with Bush Baby...Bush Baby can hit the ball a mile...incredibly accurate drives, and looong, too. Tony is a learning golfer with a stiff body but he can hit it and score. Debbie can play!....She out drove us a few times and parred a hole...

Tony wanted to eat so HB lead them to a Dominican fish house on the highway to Navarete, about two or three minutes past the entrance to RIU Complex....We ate four fish, drank four Grande Presidente beers, ate batata frita and tostones until we were exploding....They went back to Sosua and i went to Santiago...

Great day... I'll let MommC put in her reporte, but I was beat when I got home. Lots of sun and fun...

Sorry I had to run just before the end ....... would have enjoyed a drink at the bar aterwards with you all. Would you believe that the plane was 2 hours late??? Could easily have got those last 3 holes completed AND have had time for a Presidente or two!!!

Anyway, we will do it again soon I hope. Just make yourself some clubs like you made for me HB & maybe you will get them winging down the fairway too!! Just wish I could get consistent at my short game!! - Grahame.

MommC, I hope you'll consider another trip to Sosua April 19! Should be a great get-together! Hillbilly? Bushbaby? Are you guys in? If not, we'll make a point of coming to Punta Rusia to personally deliver HB's Maple everything...

Now for the rest of the story!!

Our adventure started off on a bit of a worrisome note. First we had to change our plans at the last minute as Mr DR1 was unable to confirm our dates with the resort because the person in charge of the promo was on holidays. He got confirmation the day before we had planned to leave for Sosua however by then we had company "drop in" so were unable to leave as expected.

Dates were changed for the following week without a hitch and I packed half the house to take with us :) not being entirely sure what we would need (brought lots of sunscreen and bug spray, pillows(PapaTony's anti-snore), towels and a variety of clothes with a big emphasis on beach and golf wear. Tossed golf clubs, suitcases et al in the car and off we went!!

Juan Dolio to Boca Chica was a nightmare as we were almost "done in" by buses and trucks three times by the time we reached the exit ramp for BC. NOT an auspicious begining as we were not even a quarter of the way there!!
However after that all went smoothly. Traffic through Santo Domingo was light and in no time we were on the highway to Santiago.

Drove through some very pretty countryside on an excellent highway and enjoyed seeing all the roadside stands selling everything imaginable including chivo, turkeys, ducks, chickens and rugs, wooden bowls, platters, flowers, etc.

Followed the directions to Hillbilly Haven (Hovel as HB calls it) but missed the Lumicon sign in front of the house and PapaTony was two corners past by then so we pulled into a parqueo and called. HB obliged by stepping out of the house to the curb so we could see him and TA DA!! we had arrived!
Got to meet some of the family, ate a traditional Dominican lunch (and imbibed just enough not to have problems on the rest of the drive to Sosua), and enjoyed some good conversation. Met some of the neighbours especially an ex-pat Canadian who was quite a tease!! HB has the patience of Job for sure!!

After coffee (mmmm-best coffee we had for the next week!) we headed out following HB's direction for the scenic route over the mountains. What a drive!! PapaTony enjoyed driving the mountain road (reminded him of home in Italy where he never gets to drive the mountain roads as someone else is always driving when we're there!!) and I was entralled by the lushness of the scenery.
Would we take that route again?? You bet! In fact we did already on the return trip!!

Thus we arrived in Sosua!!!

Stay tuned for the next installment!!

You should try that route after a day in Santo Domingo trying to get residencia organised, in the middle of a thunderstorm (HEAVY lightning!!) & without windscreen wipers - GREAT fun!!!!! Done the trip many times since - but ONLY in daytime!! Views are fantastic so don't be in a hurry to get where tou're going!! - Grahame.
