Dear DR1 forum,

I will be going to Santo Domingo for a week and would prefer to stay in an up-scale hotel. Could anyone recommend a few nice places. I also plan on working out a few times while I'm down there. Is Golds Gym the best place to train?

Thanks in advance.

The Jaragua

Would be it.

Otherwise the Intercontinental especially if you have a hotel frequent user plan. The Jaragua is Renaissance.

Look it up...

Expedia.com, TripAdvisor.com etc. Or Renaissance web site.

Now you have the names the internet research is your puppy.

Expensive relative to for example the Palacio, nice but not luxurious. Probably US$200.

Jaragua can be had...

...garden rooms for $99.00 and Tower rooms $109.00plus tax full breakfast included on weekends. Weekdays the prices are $149.00-$159.00 respectively. The Melia can be had for as low as $85.00 per night. and the V centennario will cost you $99.00 per night. The latter is the only one which is chica friendly! Enjoy!

You need to define "Up-scale" at least your version of it.
The hotels list by the others are all "Nice" but none are in the 5 star or 4 star range...at least in my opinion.

Gym

Golds Gym is pretty good. However, I prefer the Body Shop in Arroyo Hondo.

Oh .. and the Jaragua has a spa that is suppossed to be quite good, so they might have the equipment that you need for a workout.

Upscale... Tony I have stayed at the nicest hotels in the world. But I'm looking for the best I can get in SD. I'm guessing no more than 200-300USD per night. Does that answer your question?

All depends what you want? Boutique or all the trimmings?

Hotel Frances (Sofitel) is also very nice in the Colonial Zone.

It's a small, very nice boutique hotel. If I didn't live in SD, this would be the hotel I would stay in.

Address:
Calle Las Mercedes
Esquina azobispo Merino
Zona Colonial

Jaragua.

It is the only one that comes close.

Maybe Intercontinental V Centenario or Jaragua which gets very good ratings. As for the gym, hit the Body Shop, biggest freakin' gym in the area and good equipment. Gold's Gym is nice but not like the Body Shop, besides it stands out for its architecture.
