Phones in resorts

phones in the resorts have a card next to the phone that asks you to use *20 to call the USA or Canada, says cheapest rates, a real scam, people have been dinged bills of over $700 for their calls using this method.

Stay away from the *20

Not all 10-10 numbers are scams, 101-6868 is good

Hi all,
Put "1010" into a google search, you will find consumer watch boards that compare the rates. I use 101-6868, its only 19 cents a minute to the DR from NYC, you get billed on your Verizon bill or whatever carrier you have and there is no switching of service or monthly fees, its pay as you go. 101-6868 is owned by PDT, the same company that sells the phone cards. I have been using it for 4 years now, never a problem. 10 minutes, a dollar ninety, even to a cell phone.

I have used San Cocho cards as well as mangu etc. I also have had a good luck with Nobelcom cards I heard about from Jim h's site. The one thing you need to watch out for is connect fees. many 10 buck cards have attractive per minute rates, but $2.00 connect fees. Make 5 calls where the call gets dropped because of spotty cell service in the DR, and the card is finished.

A workmate of mine got caugt in the 10-10 thing. She called india for what she thought was very little and when she got her bill it was enormous. Not sure of the exact particulars, but needless to say she won't be using it again. On my last trip to the DR, the friend with me called her husband back home collect from the hotel twice, once to say we had arrived and then to say that we were going to be a few hours late going back home, 3 minutes and 9 minutes. Total 12 minutes. She got her phone bill and it was $82.00 Cdn. Absolutely ludicrous. I, however, have Primus as my long distance carrier at home (no extra numbers to punch in or anything) and my rate is 17 cents a minute (no connection fees either). Not sure if this is provided only in Canada but so far I have not been able to find anything close to this. Sorry if this is sounding like an ad, but I think there are many people on this board that must make an awful lot of calls to the DR and I think this is important. There are a lot of rip-offs out there and maybe we can pick up some pointers from each other. If anyone one has a better plan - please do tell - I for one would be the first to take advantage. I average around 800+ minutes a month and can use every savings possible.

LESS THAN 10 CENTS A MINUTE

When I call the DR or any other country, I always use Blackstone calling cards less than 10 cents a minute dialing direct.

10-10 numbers

World Exchange is a decent company. Have not had any problems, but a word of caution. If you use the 10-15-335 they charge $.10 a minute, with the first 10 minutes up front. So, if you call and get an answering machine you are charged $1.00. They have another number, 10-10-275, where you are charged 12.5 cents a minutes and a $3.95 a month fee and you are only billed in 1-minute increments. Hope this helps.

6 Cents per to the DR

I transfered my telephone service to Vonage and they give me 6 cents per minute to the DR anytime of the day or night from the states.

Now that's a good deal! I wonder if it works from the DR?

10-10 numbers

Do not ever use 1-800 or any supposedly toll free numbers outside of the US. I got burned in St. Maarten using the 1-800 number that was on the card next to the phone in the room.

They billed in 3 min increments and charged 5$ per min.

I got burned once in Cayman using the 800 number posted above the payphone in the airport (AT&T doesn't work there).

Tel3 charges $0.07/minute (cellular or landline) to the DR with one-minute rounding. A good deal.
