Will be staying in Nagua soon for a bit.
Does anyone have anything good, or bad to say about it?
For instance would it be about comparable to Rio San Juan as far as beaches or hotels / restaurants go. Which is the good beach to go to? Are there any internet cafes there?
Will there be any other gringos there?
Anything I should see ( or not ).
Thanks

Where will you be staying? If it is ocean front, I am assuming that it will be one of the small hotels a few miles outside of Nagua on the road to Samana.

Nagua is most definitely not a tourist city. It is a moderate size Dominican city.

If you will be staying where I think you will, then your beach option is the beach in front of the hotel. Likely there is an internet cafe in Nagua, but I don't have any details. But you will need to get into the city to find it. Getting public transportation between the city and the hotel won't be difficult, and I would think the hotels in the area I am thinking of would have to provide some sort of transportation for their guests.

The gringos you see will likely be guests in your hotel and the other one or two small hotels in the same general area.

I am not a Nagua specialist

In fact, I don't think there are any.
However, Nagua is pretty much a Dominican beach town. Tons of beaches, internet cafes yes. Nothing outstanding comes to mind except an old remark that all the women there "do it", even the Governor (who was a woman at that time..)
sStems from the fact that 40+ years ago Nagua was a place for political prisoners (El Pozo) and the Army that took "care" of them.. There fore prostitution was wide spread....
Nagua does have some nice schools, and some of the local places to eat are very good.

Thanks for the info. I'll be staying in town, and was wondering what to do with myself during the day. Sounds like I can just walk down the road to find a beach.
I'll report on any good restaurants or attractions I find.

If you wanted total immersion, Nagua is your place. I've driven through it a number of times, stopped for lunch or to take a walk around and as Ken says, it is not an average tourist destination. Let us know how your stay goes.

Wait for Amber, she's the DR1 consul in Nagua :)

I spent a weekend in Nagua like 13 years ago. Couldn't be more fun. Those people know how to party. Recently I've driven through and around, and even stopped in a BanReservas there. It stroke me as a town that is doing quite well, but no tourism per se.

You'll be fine.

No problem. The town ends at the ocean shore.

Pib's recommendation that you contact Amber is an excellent one. If she doesn't jump into this thread soon, find one of her posts and click on the PM or email button underneath. She is dr1's resident expert on Nagua.

I am trying to think of this guy's name

It's sorta like Russian...Stansilaus or something like that. He is very light skinned and has a little restaurant down the street from the nice Catholic girl's school, the one that runs past the front of the school. Everyone knows him and he does cook very well. We have eaten there a few times...

PIB I would love to "stroke" you!! Hummmm, Bo go away!! Hb strokes Pib, Bo kicks Hb...Hehehe

Hey, it's "struck" FYI. Damn if I could do in Spanish what she does in English...............

HB, grinnin'
