re: Trip Report - May 22 -May 29, 03

Well, this DR visit report is almost a mirror of the last.

Started off the visit, accepting the free Brugal handout at Las Americas. It was quite stiff and gave me a throbbing headache. Next time, I'll pass.

Trip into S.D. from Las Americas was treacherous. It had just rained and there were car wrecks galore. Taxi driver hydroplaned from one side of the road to next, nearly losing control of his car and scaring me half to death.

Construction of Las Americas highway expansion is still on-going. It looks as though there has been very little progress in the past 6 months. I heard they did not allow for proper drainage sewers and tore sections up to completely redo them again.

Stayed at the Dominican Fiesta. The hotel is removing and hauling debris away from its old defunct casino. Management says there will be a new casino operating by late fall. Since there is not any casino operating that far on the western side of S.D., it should bring alot of business into the Fiesta.

The Dominican Fiesta moved it's Business Center to the ground level in a new room and expanded to 4 PCs. The Internet gateway is through a broadband circuit and response time was very good. Rates are RD$200 for up to an 1 hr.

DR1 party as mentioned in General Stuff posts was great. It was wonderful to meet other DR1 posters.

Jan was gracious to be my Colonial City tour guide on a lazy Sunday afternoon. She has a wonderful personality with lots of friends in the neighborhood.

Casino Report: I think the Hotel Melia has eclipsed the Jaragua as the place to gamble. They have many new video slots that "actually work" as compared to other casinos where it seems 1 out of every 2 slot machines do not work. The casino is also very clean. One drawback - they still have mafiosa running the Super Keno.

Trapsing around the city: I got to see the brain center of DR1 on Calle Gustavo Mejia Ricart Ave. - Thank you, Robert!

The stores at the Acropolis continue to thin out. Kind of like walking around posh Aventura Mall in Miami and the place being empty. Stileto's is still there on the bottom floor. I noticed that high class Dominican women like Zara's on the 2nd floor. For those who want the consistency of food fare in the States, Fridays and The Outback Steakhouse are good choices.

Sunny weather, nice breezes and beautiful chicas made it a very relaxing vacation.
