Dear All,

I live in the United Kingdom and having holidayed in the Dom Rep a few weeks ago for the second time and really enjoyed the Brugal Rum.

So, I was wondering if annyone knows who, if anyone, imports Brugal Rum into the UK.

We did bring a small bottle back with us but, as you can appreciate it didn't last too long.

Thanks in advance

Darren

Hi Darren,

Greetings from Atlantic Canada.

I have no idea who imports Brugal into the U.K. but Brugal's website is at http://www.brugal.com.do and their e-mail is at correo@brugal.com.do

Perhaps you could ask direct from Brugal.

I am unable to buy Brugal Extra Viejo in Canada (at least where I live) so I usually bring back about 10 litres and just pay the duty. It still works out quite inexpensively but never last long enough lol.

In dom rep, brugal is considered a "tigre" drink (for the poor folks). Most decent people consider brugal as a drink for the low lifes. Resorts serve brugal because its cheap and foreigners don't know anything about dominican rums. If you folks really want to drink a classy dominican rum, try "Barcelo Imperial". I drink it with 7up and a twist of lime but in reality, it should be taken straight on ice or without.

Both Barcelo and Brugal are available in Spain so if you know anyone who is going there on holiday - and the odds are you do, as millions of Brits go there each year - ask them to bring you back a bottle or two.

I don't believe that you can get any Dominican rum - Brugal or otherwidse - in the UK. Believe me, I've tried and failed!

BRUGAL vs BARCELO

AZB - I would disagree upon you labeling Brugal Xtra Viejo as a "Tigre drink". It is one of the DR's most excellent rums. For it's palatable qualities and it's ability to not produce hangovers. It is an excellent light rum for all classes and occasions. Brugal con tigo siempre!

Barcelo Imperial is good but more as an after dinner drink. Watch out for the hangover.

Tufo-licious

The ultimate "tiguere" drink would be a diablito, seconded only by the ignominious "Cartador" (Carta Dorada).

Am I right or am I right?

Jane,

I thought I was expert on Dominican barrio life, but I don't know what a "diablito" is??? I know what the bipe of Carta Blanca is but choose not to share it with anyone for fear of contracting Hepititus C.

To snub Brugal Extra Viejo is a weak effort at being a snob. These are the same type of people who drink Miller instead of Presidente because its "new" and "imported".

151 + grenadina = Diablito

It's the tiguere-on-the-town's beverage of choice - more bang for his buck.

I bought a bipe of Palo Viejo once and wondered, why isn't there one Pa' lo Jovenes? :)

Honey, is that you?!

Well, Porfi, you took the words out of my hubby's mouth. He laughs at people who consider Brugal low class yet pay a fortune for blended whisky AND mix it with Coca Cola.

Go Brugal!

oh si??

151 + grenadina = Diablito

When referring to Low budget drinks, don?t leave my man ?Cleren mixed with 7up and ice. lol. Watch the hang over!!

In NYC, there is a drink we call ?NUT CRACKER?. These are different flavors of the same drink. These tasty drinks are a mixture of ? Bacardi 151+ regular Vocka + a sweet flavor. The different flavors are sold at the liquor stores (e.g. apple sour, peach sour etc). This is a drink that youngster buys before he or she goes clubbing, at the park, at festivals and parades. It is excellent when the weather is hot and Sundays when all liquor stores are closed in New York City.

Brugal is also called Dominican Viagra...

I agree with Porfio...Miller sux compared to presidente, yet I see people drinking it and thinking that they're cool because they're drinking imported beer...
My favorite chopo drink has to VAT 69...I've tried all kinds of expensive whiskies and have not liked any of them as much as good old cheap VAT 69. That's another one you can't find here in the US.

Pib,
I bet "Porfi" has passed out from the excitement of being mistaken for your hubby!;)

Blade, what's Cleren?

Suarez, I can see the label of the VAT 69 so clearly in my mind's eye...what is it?

Reminder to all: beware the Gitano 18.

Cleren: Haitian homemade rum-like hooch. Very high proof. Makes you see visions of your ancestors when you drink it. NOT for the faint hearted, and NOT to be found in your neighborhood supermarket.

VAT 69: Cheap blended Scotch whiskey imported from, you guessed it, Scotland. Quite drinkable as cheap Scotch goes - and widely distributed in the DR.

I'm suprised nobody has mentioned Wisky MacAlbert yet.

Also, dare I say that Barbancourt 5 Star is better than ANY Dominican rum (though Brugal Extra Viejo is the best value).

Hey! I brought a bottle of Barbancourt 5 Star from Dajabon yesterday. I will have to disagree with you. Nothing beats Barcelo, specially the new one (21 Aniversario). Of course Brugal EV gives you more bang for your buck.

But what do I know? I pass out by the third drink.

Follow by Porfio?s definition of Cleren, it?s a very high proof (so high almost alike rubbing alcohol) liquor. It?s extracted from ?guarapo de ca?a?. This type of liquor is very famous on the southern side of DR. When mixed with 7up, it taste just like ?guarapo de ca?a? with a hard liquor.
