aight let me introduce me...I am JJ and I'm from Jersey and I am Haitian born but raised here in the U.S. I came onto your site while browsing the net and started reading and I actually bumped into a thread in here about Haiti. I was reading it and then blahhhhwww the door was closed on the thread I guess by one of the site owners...he stated this was a Dominican Republic related site thread closed.

Now be real with me on this next question. Why do you hate Haitians??? be honest....is it a race thing??? is it something that goes wayy wayy back??? status thing because you feel anything otherwise would be looked upon as a bad status move??? explain to me...

Growing up in Haiti I thought DR was just a city, I never realize it was another country....My neighbors were Dominican, I went to school with some DomiHaitians and never knew I was supposed to dislike them....Over here I lived in a latin community for 2 years and even though I did'nt really make a lot of friends there, I did have a second family which I met there and they were all dominican...I moved away but we still tight like brothers....they even told me that they didn't have experiences with Haitian people until we met and we just clicked because underneath it all we had so many things in common...

I go to a Haitian forum and this 15 year old kid comes in asking about Haitian Dominican relations and he was posting about how his father hates Haitians and never have nothing positive to say about our people. He was a very bright young man, so he came asking to find out if Haitians feel the same about Dominicans and I was shocked when I saw the replies...if you didn't know any better you would think we were at war or something. What schocked me the most is that most of the people in there were probably around my age, so I asked them, where did they get this hatred from because I must of missed it. Most of them would just say that Dominicans hate us because we are darker and dominicans are ashamed of anything that has to do with the part of them that's African so natural instinct is to hate us cause we are black. I dont like getting political so I dont even want to touch that...

I was just wondering why this is what it is and hoping some Dominicans can shed some light...from the Dominicans I know I cant call it because like I said they are my closest friends and we are like family. Well love me or hate me because of whatever historical reasons or complexes that my country and your country has against race, I love Dominicans and even if one was to spit on my flag and hit me in the face, I would still love Dominican people, just would hate him...

I was just about to dump this thread in Criss'land but it seems that you actually want to have a debate. We have discussed this subject ad nauseam in this fora, pls. use the search feature.

To make it short for you: Dominicans (as in ALL Dominicans) do not hate Haitians (as in ALL Haitians). Just like in any country (your own included) we have some ignorant people, nasty people, and a majority of nice people. The negativity comes mostly from the problem of illegal inmigration, some comes from a past of not exactly amicable relations and some come from years of brainwashing by our Hitler Junior and His Survirvors. And yes... some people are plain racists. Just like everywhere.

A moderator's note:
I will delete any post that is not relevant to this discussion and promotes racism... either way. Thanks.

Pib is right JJ.

I think the thread you are speaking about was closed because the issue has been discussed over and over again.

This is a DR site so everything you read should have a DR content. The only problem that I ahve is when Hatian cross DR illegally. I have the same problem when Dominicans' do it also.

Keep in mind that DR was also under Hatian rule. There is some bad blood. This is a very touchy subject so that is all I will say on that. As far as hating someone because theya re Hatian, yes some people are like that and some are not.

It's not a perfect world so things will not be perfect.

Welcome to DR1 by the way.

hatian-dominican

I think that most of the intolerance and hate towards hatians by Dominicans is genereted by ignorance and stupidity. I also think that the stereotype of Hatian hating Dominicans is fading. As Hatians increase their influence and participation in Dominican culture more dominicans will let go of their identity and asimilate the strongest culture, that of Haiti, and there is nothing we can do about it because that is the way migratory mechanics work. In years to come, we'll live in a more diverse culture (almost unified) and ignorance fueled racisim will cool off. But again I must say, I havent heard any racist remarks or seen any manifestation of hate towards hatians from the people I talk or interact daily with and I dont think most Hatians, poor and rich, that cross the border everyday into the Dominican Rep. would submit themselves to bigotry and racism if they felt hated by Dominicans.

An anthropologist friend who is a very interesting and remarkable guy and has written several books about Dominican culture and our everyday way of life and he also lived in Haiti for some 10-12 years, during which he fully learned Patua (he says its the most beautiful descriptive language he's learned and he speaks 12 languages!!). He was recently visiting some friends in the cibao region and near the border and he tells me that he has never seen such a fast expanding demographic migration from Hatians into the Dominican Republic. He told me lots of Dominican wifes and daughters tend to be moving into the cities while men are staying to work the campo and re-marrying Hatian wifes and having children with them. These women will pass their culture on to the offspring and these generations of Dominican kids will assimilate Hatian culture as their own b/c it is the one being taught by their mothers-the culture carriers- and have the advantage just as the kids going to school in haiti, of learning both languages where as 100% dominican kids will only know one language and only one culture.

So in a nut shell, I dont hate hatians just as most dominicans dont hate hatians, that notion is just residue of the fierce relationships both countries have had in the past 200 years. Most dominicans will become hatians in the next couple of decades so why hate and not embrace.:classic:

Once More ...

My Brother! Welcome to DR1.

:: Ahem :: I have said this before and I will say it again, those of you who know skip the credentials part it's old hat but he needs to know eher I am coming from to get to the last little miniscule point at the end. Sorry!

I am white. My ex-wife in the U.S. is black. Married for 16 years. So are all of my friends. Many relatives, my 11 year old son in the U.S. etc. In fact I think my ex had only white freinds and I had only black friends. Go figure. I even started out here in the DR with a friend of mine who happens to be black - and looks very Haitian - so we had some interestign experiences.

:: OK. DR1'ers can start reading again :: ;)

Anyway there is a lot of dicrimination against Haitians. Ignorant Dominicans or not my friend was stopped lots, and the police would not believe he was American no matter what. Fast forward to my family today, I have a Dominican wife who would be 'black' in the U.S. but thinks she's white. OK. Whatever. But if she goes out in the sun for 10 minutes and turns half a shade darker she's furious with me because she thinks she just lost ten IQ points.

You Dominicans not in the US may not get that but I'll bet JJ did. Yep. They do it, too. You know how blacks are in the states. Yelling about racism and discrimination but it's OK within the community. Don't tell me you don't think that Julian Bond is smarter than Al Sharpton because his skin is lighter. I -know- you've had that conversation before. Or heard it.

Well, in the US it's black or white (except in the black community) but here's it's a million shades of brown each with it's own advantages but still the darker the skin the less intelligent and/or desireable you must be.

I don't get it. But, that's my dos centavos. Again, welcome, to DR1!

I'm sorry i have to see that happening , i have experienced the Hate against Dominicans by Haitians and the Hate against Haitians by Dominicans sometimes i think the Dominicans go a little overboard but is the same in both side of the fence the reason why we see it more in the D.R. is simply because we live here.

i think that the only way to get rid of this hate between this 2 nations is by educating the young. Haitians need to get better education and in order to communicate better Haitians will have to learn Spanish. (Haiti language barrier makes it difficult to prosper)
I'm sorry i have to see that happening

i like good people i hate bad people and racism plainly destroy communities and countries.

well I dont see why the effort has to be all ours...we speak French and you speak Spanish...if we are to understand each other, there should be a joint effort made...I know a few Dominicans that speak creole, good enough that we understand, and alot of Haitians speak Spanish anyway even if not perfect enough that we can communicate...

well thank you all for you input, I am new to this site, so of course I dont know everything that has been posted...if I posted something that has been discussed here already, I appologize.

From some of the replies I gathered here it seems most of you feel the same as I do that it's just stupidity and ignorance...there are some replies that sound like the poster could careless because maybe this is not a personal issue.

Personally, I feel had Haiti and D.R. worked together from the beginning things would have been much better for both countries...I do feel there are alot of racist motives behind our poblems but I can almost understand...History has shown us time again that racism is a cancer that almost no country in this world has been able to escape...even in Haiti where the majority of the country 95 percent is black, the 5 percent is regarded as better then the rest...so it would not be suprising if there's a color complex on the other side to and if there is, then it would certainly explain part of the Haiti/DR issue...

Well hopefully this question wont be an issue in the next few decades because I have seen both cultures and love them both...it's a shame that so many Dominicans dont know much about Haitian culture and visa versa because they are both so deep and nice

jj is not about who put the most effort is about getting out of isolation if Haiti speaks Spanish the Horizons will be brighter but we shouldn't be wasting time on this subject i don't see Haiti and the D.R. changing their ways.

I guess not and I guess the subject of Haitian people and Dominican people getting passed the ignorance towards one another is a waste of time right Erick...

Well thanks for taking the time to reply...

JJ00 i'm not all Haitians and Dominican people i'm not wasting my time on it anymore, this subject will go on for ever regardless if you and i want to fix it, i don't think is about much ignorance but more about pride. Dominicans freedom was taken once by Haitians and they fought to regain it and won, Haitains and Dominicans are too different there's no relation and to top it all up, the rampant illegal immigration most of the cars robbed in the D.R. end up in Haiti and so on this is not changing anytime soon.

nuff said.

The Haitians have destroyed their own economy,

deforested their country, and so now we should welcome them with open arms,do do the same thing here??? I don't think so!!!! What can they add to the Dominican Republic? Nothing! They only further stress the health care, educational, and police force,to the breaking point! Build a huge fence, and shoot them as they climb over! cccccccccccccccccccccccccccccc

lol..

there is no need to learn Patua or Creole. It is two diffrent countries. Hatians stay in Haiti unless they obtain proper visa to go to DR and vice versa.

This does not have to turn into who is a darker shade ad blah blah

obey the laws and stay in your own country..this applies to everyone.

What is it that you folks don't understand???

Its very simple folks: no one hates a haitain business man who come to Dr in his SUV, does his business and leaves after spending money here. No one hates the 3 haitian students we have in gold's gym in santiago. No one hates the haitains who party with us in clubs / discos and spend money like paper.
These haitians have class and they are self supportive business folks who actually live here for business reasons or attending schools.
The haitians we have problems with are the illegal uneducated poor street beggers who have invaded streets of this country. Its seems there are millions and millions of them here and more coming everyday. They eat, piss and sh*t on the streets and leave their garbage behind. They beg you to death and won't leave you in peace. eating in an open air restaurant has become a nightmare as these creatures will beg you to a point where you would want to throw your plate at them. If you refuse to give money, they won't go away, if you give them money then they all storm you. There just doesn't seem to be any escape. Dominicans and other decent folks have had enough of these street beggers and want them disappeared. I am not even dominican, and I want to kill a few of them.
Does that make any sense?

Local Magazine

On this theme - and perhaps someone can answer ... Why?
There is a small booklet called "Golden Sun" which is intended for free distribution to tourists along the North Coast of the DR. It's printed in Sosua by Dominicans! About 10,000 copies every 2 months are given out free.
Go to the centre pages where you will find a map of the Dr with Haiti also shown. Why is the Dominican character shown wearing a loose shirt, neckerchief, a sun hat and his skin colour is light brown whilst the Haitian is shown as being black?
Doesn't this support the argument that Dominicans view themselves diferent to the Haitian and that racialism here does exist between the two halves of Hispaniola?

Show me one country where racism doesn't exist?
Funny when a white woman only prefers black men she is not considered racist but when a white male prefers only white women, he is considered a racist.
Hatians are not hated because they are only blacks. They are hated because the ones we see are beggers and pests to society. The well-to-do hatians are not viewed with the same eyes. Let me make one thing clear, not all hatians are blacks just like not all jamaicans are blacks. I have seen and met many hatians who are whites or arab looking. It would be correct to say that 97% hatians are blacks but not all of them are as poor as we may think they are. there are hatians who are very rich and send their kids to USA for educations. These Hatians come to DR and spend expensive holidays in the luxurious resorts and enjoy the white dominican women. I know of many Dominican women who would love to marry those better classed hatians.
But we are not talking about them. We talk about the invaders who come here illegally and storm the streets like cockroaches. They beg and live off the streets, breast feeding the babies while begging. The kids pee right on the steets while you pass by. They even sleep on the sidewalks. They are everywhere in santiago.
the first words they learn is: "dame algo...". they have destroyed their own country and now they are after this one. If you don't believe me, just cross the border from Dejabon.

99% of Haitians are very dark and african looking, where as only a small percentage of Dominicans fit that physical profile. There are lots of Haitians living in the Campo around Jarabacoa and in Jarabacoa itself. It seems to me that most Dominicans don't have a hatred for them, but in a country where jobs are limited every extra person looking for work makes it more difficult for locals. My brother in law often hires Haitians to work for him (cheaper and more reliable) It interesting to note that most of the Haitian children (in Jarabacoa) do not speak Creole, only Spanish. My wife knows quite a bit of creole and often talks to Haitians and know several Dominican families that have adopted Haitian children. She like many Dominicans feel sorry for Haitians.
