Dominican weightlifter Wanda Rijo, local favorite in the 75 kg class, won her gold medal this evening, with a Pan Am record total and records in the two lifts. She was magnificent, although a little too commercial, throwing gifts of the candy bar that sponsors her into the growd.....the crownd loved it!

Turb?, the criminal that from his jail cell has offered RD$500,000 to each medal winner, is now out RD$2.5 million since the full page publication. If this is true, these kids have brought in RD$600,000 to their houses, and for each of them, this is major cash. The Diario Libre says that he showed a suitcase full of money to a journalist...while in jail!! He awaits trial for the killing of a former partner that had previously tried to kill him...put three slugs into him, as a matter of fact.
The volleyball victory over Brazil was a major step. It shows what the kids can do when there is major money in back of them. Cristobal Marte has dedicated the past ten years to reach this stage with his girls. Congratulation Cristobal.
