Tropical Storm Mindy has formed near the northeastern tip of Dominican Republic.

At 5 PM AST the center of Mindy was located near 19.2N/69.0W. This is just 34km (21mi) east of Samana, and 57km (36mi) east-southeast of Las Terrenas. Mindy is moving toward the northwest near 19 km/hr (12 mph) and this motion is expected to move the storm away from Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic and to near the Turks and Caicos Islands in the next 24 hours.

Maximum sustained winds are near 65kph (40mph) with gusts to near 80kph (50mph). Some strengthening is possible during the next 24 hours. Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 185km (115 miles) from the center. The estimated minimum central pressure is 1004mb (29.65 inches).

Periods of heavy rain are expected to continue over the northeastern half of the Dominican Republic for the next 24-36 hours.

Mindy Strengthens

Mindy is a little stronger at this hour as it moves northwestward. A Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect for the southeastern Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands.

At 8 PM AST on this Friday evening the center of Tropical Storm Mindy was located near 19.8N/69.5W or about 67km (42mi) northwest of Samana and 53km (33mi) north of Las Terrenas.

Mindy is moving toward the northwest near 19kph (12mph) and this motion is expected to move the storm away from the Dominican Republic and toward the Turks and Caicos Islands during the next 24 hours. The storm center will pass approximately 30 miles to the North of Sosua and Cabarete between 2AM-4AM AST on Saturday morning. Maximum sustained winds are have increased to near 70kph (45mph) with gusts to 97kph (60mph). Some gradual strengthening is possible during the next 24 hours. Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 185km (115mi) mainly to the northeast of the center. The latest minimum central pressure reported by an Air Force reserve hurricane hunter aircraft is 1002 mb...29.59 inches.

Periods of heavy rain are possible over the northeastern half of the Dominican Republic for the next 24 to 36 hours.

AH HA!! So that's where the rain is from!!

I have not been diligent in my hurricane watching. It felt like bands of rain were coming through here. Really wet for a while, but then again we are supposed to be getting rain now that itis the tobacco transplanting season.....
