Just learned that the Cueva de las Maravillas, between San Pedro de Macoris and La Romana, just won the gold medal in the Miami Beach 2003 Bienal of Architecture. The Bienal is organized by Florida International University with the American Institute of Architects and the Panamerican Association of Architects. The award goes to Marcos Barinas, chief architect of the habilitation project of the cave. This award is a recognition to the excellent job done in bringing this cave to the general public. Barinas credits the multidisciplinary team that worked with him on this commitment handed to him by the Ministry of Environment. Congratulations to Barinas and to Minister of Environment Frank Moya Pons, the mastermind behind the project, and to cave expert Domingo Abreu, a key collaborator. Claudio Chea, who contributed the special illumination effects, also deserves due recognition. As soon as we find a link with more information, we will post it here.
