Lots of Whales in Samana Bay

Kim Beddall, founder of whalewatching in Samana Bay tells me there are whales all over the place. For that reason, she has her first excursion tomorow instead of on the 15th as has been the case in most years. Another difference is that this years passengers on the first excursions are sure to see whales whereas in many previous whales they were likely to see them.

Nearly all the humpback whales of the North Atlantic winter in Dominican waters. They don't eat in the winter; instead this is the season for mating and giving birth. Calves conceived this winter will be born next winter.

In the spring they return to northern waters between Cape Cod, Massachusetts and Iceland and Greenland to feed.

You can always find someone to take you whalewatching in Samana, but by far the best excursions are those with Kim Beddall. She really cares about the whales and is very knowledgeable. For that reason, her excursions are very popular. Additionally, she does not overload her boat, as many do. Consequently, if you know when you will be in Samana, it is best to contact her in advance. That isn't to say that if you don't check with the office one day that you won't be able to go the next, but to be absolutely sure, more advance notice is best if it is possible.
