I'm going to be in Higuey on Tuesday for Nuestra Senora de la Altagracia. I know it'll be crowded with thousands of pilgrims and there will be a lot to see between the people watching and the religious ceremonies, but I was wondering if anyone had any specific suggestions... what time things might happen, where to go besides the basilica, a good shop nearby to buy some paintings/cigars, really anything would be helpful.
I was in Higuey yesterday for a couple hours and went to the concert at the Basilica and the carnival and basketball game, but thought it would be interesting to see it on the holiday. Any suggestions for short side trips we could make the same day (from Punta Cana) would also be helpful.
