Another "GREAT" example of working in the DR

OK guys I need to vent a little in here...

I was talking to my sister who is a medical doctor. She's currently a resident, finishing up a specialty in internal medicine at "The Morgan". She has six months to go to finish. Well...last week there was a meeting where the press was present, in which they talked about the lack of money and supplies the hospital faces. The head resident was not available to talk, so they asked my sister to represent the medical residents...she told the press a few of the things that were happening at this hospital such as how the food they got was so bad that sometimes they found cockroaches, maggots, etc in it, how patients die in the hallways for lack of basic supplies, etc...Two other doctors also talked to the press.

See the article here: Morgan Declares Itself in State of Emergency

OK great...So then what happens next is that the health secretary call the director of the hospital to complain about the story published in the newspapers and specifically about my sister's comments to the press. Supposedly told the director to control his people. Basically to tell him to keep their mouth shut...Next thing you know the director calls my sister in and basically threatens her. He tells her to not try to be a hero, because all heroes are dead and buried, that the only reason why he doesn't send her packing is because she has the highest grades in her class and it would look too suspicious, to forget about her doing a sub-specialty (something she wants to do), because he would never approve it, that if she continues talking she will never work in this country because the doctors all know each other (they're all members of the AMD) and he would make sure she would never find work, etc...
She's so frustrated and scared because she's been in this program for a couple of years now and only has six more months to go, and they could say she failed one the last two classes she needs to graduate...For now she's being punished with extra long hours and extremely hard schedules...

Those of you who want to come to the DR and find work, take my last two posts as examples of how screwed up things are in the DR...

She would be treated the same way in the USA!

If you have no political power, you better keep your mouth shut until you get some!! Anyone who makes their boss look bad to the "press" is asking for it!! CCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCcc

Sorry Dude,

I sympathise with you and your sister, but she should have thought about the consequences before she opened her mouth. This would happen anywhere, not just in the DR.

Hang in there, maybe things will blow over... It might help if she apologises and tells him she didn't think things through (she wouldn't even be lying!) before she talked to the press..

Criss: Thanks for your support...I knew you'd understand.

The good thing is that since in this country anyone can do whatever the hell he/she pleases without any consequences, if this guy prevents her from graduating...Well I better shutup...

is the same here too...

Im sorry to say that this situation would be somewhat the same in the States as well. It would be under wraps of course, but in any part of the world, if the boss (El Jefe) doesnt like you... you are assed out.

However, she may be able to buy her way out of it; you are in the DR after all, so money talks... maybe a nice pricey gift or straight up cash... let me know how it all works out.

Sounds like my experiences with the NYC Dept. of Ed. You have to be smart and good to survive. Most aren't willing to take the risks.

It is a shame that anyone can be "punished" for expressing an honest opinion. This is, however the case everywhere! I have seen it happen in every employment situation that I have been involved in. I wish your Sister the best of luck! Honesty is not always the best policy!!

Or

You could leak the story to another paper, like the Diario Libre and tell your sister's side of things with a few more witnesses and really put the bastards in the fire.

That is a crock of shit that the doctors would gang up against her.

Doctors in this country are pretty smart and will not go quietly into the night. The AMD is totally against the SEC Public ?Health?

Oh yeah and it not the AMD any more it is the CDM= Colegio Dom de Medicos.

This is a fight that could possible close down a lot of hospitals if porperly done. Get Leonel on her side and Eduardo Estrella. Both of them would listen to her, see the evidence and love to use this against Soldevilla a giant A.H.! As well as proof of the stupidity and ineptness of Hippo's gov/t

HB: The plan is to remain quiet for a little while, unless until she graduates (6 more months). If they prevent her from graduating then we will go to the newspapers with her side of the story. All the other residents are urging my sister to continue to talk and tell the papers everything that's going on (there's a hell lot more), but I told her not to do that, because everybody else is scared to death to say anything and when it comes down to it they will not support her and she will be left to fend for herself.

I would love nothing more than to take this to the papers as I also cannot stand Soldevila and I think in the end it woud be good for the patients, and even the doctors and residents themselves, but the reality is that my sister will need a job afterwards and as you can see by the reaction (even here) she will not get much sympathy or support from anyone...

In spite of all that, I'm very proud of her...She's my youngest sister.

We will see how it goes...

Your sister doctor to be in DR

This is so surreal, I cant believe what she is going through, I suppose its lack of experience and being as usual in the wrong place at the wrong time. Be courageous though if you end up going to the papers rest assured that Dominicans aren't that silly and they will definitely support you. Once she is graduated and in the worst scenario of not getting a job in RD I would tell her to pack up and come to the UK... We lack nurses, doctors, all kind of specialists. Thousands of foreign people are recruited every year to fill in these vacancies and even so many more are urgently needed. Believe me our social system is seriously dilapidated...

ANIMO y muchos saludos de un simpatico espanol en Londres !!!
