As reported by the newspapers ex-president Leonel Fernandez was invited to Washington to participate in talks with the IMF and the IDB. Why would they invite Leonel and not Hippo? Do they feel that he's pretty much assured the presidency for the next presidential period or did they call him up to Washington to tell him to shut up about the economic situation? It would be interesting to know why the IMF is talking with an ex-president...
What do you guys think?

It sounds like a clear message on who they think can get the talks moving and who they think could actually negotiate in good faith.

Is it also a message that the negotiations with Hippo have failed?

It is not clear who actually initiated the meeting. But not surprising. Leonel is the front runner at present and he has a very good reputation internationally. He distinguished himself in international relations during his first term in office.

I'm sure there are many in the international arena that are hoping he is the winner.

Let us hope that the IMF, the IDB and other International lending organizations will hold off making anymore 'advances' to the Hipolito Administration until AFTER the elections determine just who will be the next Presidente de Republica Dominicana!

Should all such do that, then Hipolito will surely lose in the wake of the economic implosion to follow!

Then the NEW Administration can get down to the business of addressing the necessary steps for recovery under the mandate of the lending agencies.

It'll be a very bitter pill to swallow for a couple of years; ie, higher taxes, higher costs of living, etc., but in the short term of recovery, will be a good thing. Maybe some economic/financial responsibility will be generated in the ruling class for a change.

And, Yes, that is wistful thinking. However, SOMETHING must be done to educate the elite (political and industrial) in the elements of business/governmental cooperation that is so necessary in today's internationalism.

No such luck, Texas. According to Diario Libre, the IMF is about to advance another US$60M.

Were I to guess, I might think that the IMF invited Leonel to try to convince him that the money will not be used by Hippo to buy reelection.

On a similar note, a particularly "lambon" friend finally got his "botella" (i.e. no-show job) with the government - in the miltary intelligence department, if you can believe that! He's a particularly pitiful lambon, so he never got anything except rice and zinc roofing before. This tells us (1) just how desparate the PRD is, and (2) that they still have money to spend to buy votes.

And now US$60M more, thanks to Uncle Sam and his G7 counterparts!
