Does anybody know of a decent hotel in Santiago, preferably by the Tavera Dam? We started kitesurfing there and want to stay a few days to check out the wind better. thought about camping but saw these fisherman with big white sheets over them with the holes cut out for their eyes... don't think they're KKK... must be some wicked bugs that come out at night!

thanks for any referrals in advance. Also decent places to eat would be appreciated.

There aren't any

Santiago is about 20-25 kms from the Tavera Dam. You can stay very inexpensively at the Hotel Colonial in Santiago. There might be some place in Moca where you can stay and cut the distance in half, more or less. Hotels in Moca would be an oxymoron IMO. There ARE Motels along the hwy. If you don't mind the traffic, they might be cheaper that travelling back and forth to Santiago or Moca or La Vega.

Could there be some places up near Tavera? Don't know. If you guys ask, I am sure you can find a place to crash.

hi HB,

thanks for your info. I don't want to stay at someplace cheap, subject to spotty electricity, bed bugs, and street noise. Do you know of a nicer place to stay that might also have a good restaurant? This will be a mini holiday for us, I'm 38 and am thru staying at hostel type places unless I absolutely have no other choice:)

I only stayed in a hotel once in Santiago and it was at the Gran Almirante. They have a decent casino, pool, workout area, and probably restaurant. I don't know about the dam, but the location is good as far as getting to the rest of Santiago.

It was expensive for DR standards, but very nice.

Stay at Hotel Aloha Sol

Hotel Aloha sol really is a wonderful place to stay and right in the center of things. It has aircon, a nice tv with 99 channels, hot water showers, and a smiling and helpful staff waiting to assist you with luggage. I would recommend this place over any other, and I was just there last week. At about 33 bucks a night it can't be beat. Schmen

If that is your requirement

Then the Aloha Sol is a good place, but there will be street noise since it is on the main drag of Santiago. The Colonial is not a cheap place, BTW, they have 24/7 electricity, TV and mini-bars, but no restaurant. There are plenty of good restaurants nearby.

No, I don't get a commission from them!

The Gran Almirante is a very nice place, most assuredly, the best we have to offer, at least until Huascar Rodr?guez opens up his new place.

The road into Tavera is about a 12 minute ride from Santiago, once you get on the highway.

Enjoy!
