I just got back from a horror filled trip to the Dominican Republic.

My sister and her fianc? were traveling from Ireland to Bavaro to stay at the Iberostar Dominican resort. She is a travel agent for Thomas Cook in Dublin and the trip was for pleasure and also for research. She goes on a lot of trips to places so that when she sells them, she can give a first hand experience to her prospective clients.

I live in the U.S and had some time to spare so I decided to go to the DR for a few days R&R but primarily to see my sister who I had not seen in almost a year. The plan was to spend a night in Santo Domingo, then drive to Bavaro to pick up my sister and fianc?, then head back to Santo Domingo to do some sight seeing. We would then go back to Bavaro for a more relaxed time before going home.

I flew into Santo Domingo and stayed at the Jaragua Hotel. The trip from the airport to the hotel was the start of a nightmare that lasted for several days. I drove a rental at dusk on the highway from hell where people walk out in front of oncoming traffic at an alarming rate. There were no identifying lanes and it was generally a free for all with no observed speed limit. I passed through what can only be described as a 30-minute construction zone all the way to Santo Domingo. Upon arrival in Santo Domingo, I realized the city was not much better. In fact it can only be described as a slum. I passed through some of the most depressing areas I have ever seen where homes are simply concrete shacks and the roads and traffic were unbelievable. Adults and children alike roamed the streets in oncoming traffic and the number of motorcycles criss crossing in front of traffic was astounding. No signals and no lights on most of the motorcycles. It was a relief to reach the hotel.

The hotel was typical of most Marriott owned properties and from what I can tell; it is the premier hotel in Santo Domingo. It is right on the Malecon with a beautiful view of the ocean. After checking in I decided to wander up the Malecon to see if I could find a restaurant. Instead all I could find were people trying to offer their "services" or generally try to get some money from me. I quickly returned to the safety hotel where I spent the rest of the evening.

The next day I had to drive to Bavaro to pick up my sister. It is and approx three hour drive. I was looking forward to the drive, as I would get to see a good portion of the country. The route was to take me through Boca Chica, San Pedro De Marcoris, La Romana, Higuey then Bavaro.

From Santo Domingo to San Pedro, most of the road was highway. The exception being Boca Chica. The highway passed through a gritty section, which is not unusual with any highway in the world. From Boca to San Pedro the highway was beautiful modern roadway. Upon arrival in San Pedro, I passed through the center of town but quickly realized it was a mistake. It was an unbelievably poor town with no functioning traffic signals and everything was run down. People and traffic merged into one big mess and it took me quite a time to pass through. I was horrified I might hit one of the wandering children walking or cutting through traffic on a motorcycle. I saw many horrifying near accidents with as many as 5 people (Adults and children) on one motorbike. The town limits could not come quickly enough.

Next town up was La Romana and along the way I passed a couple of dead donkeys roadside and many other people with guns strapped to their backs on motorcycles. La Romana was my first run in with guys in Green Uniforms with I could only assume were some sort of Police. My Spanish being limited, I have no idea why I was singled out from traffic. I was stopped turning at a green light while moving with the traffic. The end result was a bizarre interaction with two uniformed individuals that cost me $10 (US) and no ticket. I continued on my although I was shaken a little after being shaken down for money. The rest of the trip was uneventful thankfully, and the scenery was beautiful. The towns did improve a little but Higuey was a bit scary. There was an election going on and I had people stop in front of my car waving banners in my window. It was a bit nerve wracking but I did what everyone else did. I just kept driving through the crowds.

After three hours I reached the Iberostar Domincana on Bavaro beach. It was a beautiful location and had everything onsite. No need to leave the resort. After 6 days, my sister and fianc? was somewhat bored and looking forward to seeing some more of the country.

The trip back to Santo Domingo was just as nerve wracking as the original trip out and it was highlighted by two more run ins with the Men In Green. Another $5 and then just as we crossed the bridge back into Santo Domingo and got off the highway, we had another run in. Again stopped for no apparent reason. The end result was I was threatened with jail and hand cuffs if I did not hand over $100 (US) dollars. My sister was in near tears in the car and the only way this asshole was going to let us go was if we handed over the money. In no way did I ever let him know how much money I was carrying. I had purposefully only carried small denominations after the first experience and hid the rest. But this guy would not let us go without paying up. He was rude and I hope he chokes on the food he buys with the money he extorted from us.

We made it back to the hotel where we spent the rest of the evening. My sister was too distraught to leave the safely of the hotel that evening.

The next morning we decided to go to the Colonial Zone to see the town and do some shopping. It was a beautiful day so we decided to walk the Malecon. What a bad decision. From the moment we left the gate of the hotel, we were harassed for money from everyone. Taxis would stop traffic trying to get our attention, children would try to clean your shoes as you walked, people would try to sell food and God knows what else as we passed. It was almost like we had signs on our backs saying please harass us! After the previous nights ordeal, my sister was still shook up and she demanded we go back to the hotel. We took a cab back to escape the crowd.

After that experience, my sister only wanted to get back to the safety of here resort in Bavaro. She is an experienced traveler and this trip was too much for her. That day we took another trip back to Bavaro and again we were stopped by Men in Green and extorted money from. It was a relief to get back to the safety of the resort. I spent a night in Bavaro where I enjoyed the resort. The beach and weather were beautiful.

In the end I decided not to go back to Santo Domingo as planned. I had seen all I wanted to see and took an early flight back. My sister left on her scheduled flight and never the resort from the time I left.

My experience with the Dominican Republic was one I will never want experience again. It is a third world country and not a worthy vacation destination. The streets are filthy, the police corrupt, and the food bad and EVERYTHING looks like it has been in a state of construction for the past thirty years.

I would never recommend this place to anyone. Most of all, my sister will not be recommending this country to any potential tourists. Save yourself and your money.

Stay at home!

I stopped reading your post where you gave the guy $100. I think next time you should give him more. Please tell me where you will be travelling to next so I can buy a green uniform and follow you.

What would you suggest I do when someone with a gun threatens to take you to jail if you do not pay up? Police are people you turn to for help. Not to get ripped off.

Although some of the experiences you had were regretable, I must say these are not the experiences of many tourist, or else people would not keep coming back or even moving to SD after a couple visits.

Since you don't seem to be amenable to accepting other cultures and lifestyles, it will be best that you never return. Good ridance!

People need to understand that if you go to another country people there will have other customs, foods and habits. When visiting another country you need to be sure that you can accept the differences and if you can not be open minded then stay home. I am sure that there are things foreighners would perceive as negative things in your country and you would not like to hear the comments.

So next time keep your negative comments to yourself. As my mom says, if you can't say something good don't say anything at all, or better yet, if you don't like it, go home, we don't need to explain our way of life to you; we are not telling you how to live in your country, don't tell us how to live in ours.

If I had a choice between a city (Dublin) with a smack head epidemic or a few Amet cops I know what I would choose.

Let's also not forget that family focused and peace loving group they call the IRA/Sinn Fein.

I think you?re right, I would rather stay at home!

Hunter, Sorry for your bad experience, as an American living in the island now, I can tell you first hand that everything you said was true, we Dominican's all wish that all those things could be alot better in the island, you can't really be who you are or where you from without being harrassed some how, the best way here is try to blend in with the local folk's, my first two month's there was also a nightmare, and I am Dominican but born and raised in the States, like you it was awful!! but in Santo Domingo tolerance is the key, the Dominican in these parts are a whole different animal (metephoricly speaking) maybe one day you can return and look me up somehow and we will see how your stay can be alot more pleasant then before, sometimes knowing and traveling with a native makes things better, the islands hospitality especially in the Capital has changed, it is definitately not tourist friendly.. if you come back stay on the North side, which handle tourist on a daily basis, just remember go to the capital on bus only!! get in touch with a local friend or tour guide, stay for a casual visit, go to the malls or movies or bowling alleys in piantini, arroyo hondo, naco praderas etc. in the capital as an outsider you must have tunnel vision, don't look at any swindlers in the eyes, walk away and say no with an attitude when needed, I've survived in the capital this way it's not an easy place but just like any major U.S. city you just have to know how to play the game. take care.

Yet you?re not posting from the DR?

it is definitively not tourist friendly.

Give me a break! I see hundreds of tourists in the capital everyday.
Are they all really unhappy and screaming to get back to their resorts/hotels?
Have you been to the Colonial Zone lately?
Oh, I forgot, you?re not in the DR.

I looked up "Tourist" in the Dictionary,I saw your picture!

What you call a "Nightmare", some of us call an "Adventure"! Some people are "Predators",some are "Prey"!
Some people are made for an "All Inclusive Resort",some of us travel until dark, then find a place to sleep!
There is room for both kinds of people here, and everywhere else.
No need to paint such a bleak picture of the DR!
Suppose you were eating at a restaurant, and ordered a steak dinner. The Salad was fresh and crispy, the shrimp coctail huge and spicy, the steak tender and and flavorful, the deserts rich and sweet! The bread was moldy!
I guess we all know that your "Review" of the restaurant would focus on the "bread",and not on the rest of the "meal"!
By the way, anyone who gets taken for $5 dollars, not to mention $100 dollars must have "Pendejo" tatooed on his forehead!
You need to get "OUT' more!!!

I'm not in the D.R. now! because I'm in Orlando Fl on business, but if you read my post I did mention that I live there.. right!!!, look don't take people's opinion so damm personal, everyone has a different view sometimes you and I are Dominican, so are my parent's and probably yours, but Dominican's complain about the country all the time, you know you can see the news on a daily basis or listen to Freddy Veras Goico right, Tourist for the most part are ok with some of the capital's problem's but it's definately not a tourist town, colonial zone OK it's all good, but then what....that's right KAOS!!!

Never Never again

It seems as though some are very sensitive about the slum they live in. One suggestion maybe TO CLEAN IT UP rather than look away and ignore the garbage. I had my running shoe's shined by children. I was robbed by the police. (not as baddly as Robert ) but when a cop points a gun at you and rubs his fingers together asking for money you give it to them. Some here want us to believe that it is all in our imagination and that it is a wonderfull place full of beutifull people and fantastic sites. Sorry to pop your bubble but go out and see the world it's not all a slum like the D.R. Some want me to go away and stop spreding the truth about the garbage. I will tell as many as I can that the D.R is a dump. I own a smaLL I own a small store and speak to hundreds of people a day and I will tell all about the real D.R. sorry miguel but you must have a vested interest in keeping nieve tourists ill informend. Go away! NO WAY

I have traveled to over 30 different counties and not one was as filthy as the D.R.

It would seem as though both of my trips to the D.R. were trips from hell. That is not the case. I had a good time both times there. The locals that I met were very friendly and I never felt threatend or in any danger when I walk through Santo Domingo or anywhere else. Most would leave you alone with a "no gracias". I didn't write my revue because of a bad time in the D.R. I wrote it to let anyone that wants to know what its like beyond the travel mags glossy pictures and descriptions

Bruinhunter, I am sorry you and your family did not enjoy your vacation. The Dominican Republic can be overwhelming and chaotic to a first time visitor. As a dominican I am kind of embarrased to read your trip report and the fact that your sister won't be recommending the DR to her clients. She should not go that route. She should warn them but also speak of the beauty of the country and let them decide, IMO. There is sooooooooo much more and I'm sorry you missed it. Perhaps you're too into your lifestyle and so a third world country is not your cup of tea. It's not for everyone, I admit that; but it is a beautiful country.

This is exactly the problem - if you go to DR (or anywhere for that matter) with only images of what you saw in a magazine and expect a 100% tropical paradise with every first world amenity in every inch of the country and with someone holding your hand the entire time to ensure every second is perfect of course you are going to be disappointed.

DR has so much more to offer than the pictures if you could only have a little street smarts and sense of adventure.

Hidden Agendas

These 2 new posters that came out of nowhere must have a hidden agenda here.

There is no way either of you two have travelled more than I. I have visited literally every island in the Caribbean on business or for diving as well as most of Latin America.

Although there is a garbage problem here it is nothing too out of hand and especially to make a ranting campaign about.

This is one of the most friendly destinations I know. People are truly friendly and embrace tourists here not just a fake welcome you recieve in the rest of the islands. I can tell you countless stories of harassment from locals in Jamaica and some of the other islands not only from police but from locals that DO NOT welcome tourists. I will bet you will never get that type of reception here.

Most of the islands are MUCH more backwards than here, and CAOS is not noticable because there is hardly anything to do away from the beach anyway.

As for food, it seems everything that is cooked on the rest of the islands has curry in it. Even Kentucky fried chicken is made with curry! yuck!

Outside the Bahamas, PR or Aruba not a decent casino could be found.

Lets not even get started with other Latin American cities and security. I imagine you never travelled to Venezuela, Colombia or Brazil?

Its all my fault!

OK I apologize. I am totally wrong. It is all my fault.

1) It is my fault I was ripped off by your police. It is my fault that your government does not do anything about the apparent corruption going on. I should have known better. I should have argued with the police officer in my limited Spanish and told him I will not pay him under any circumstances. I should have been prepared to go to jail and leave my sister in the car to fend for herself.

2) It is my fault for finding children running in and out of traffic traveling in excess 140 KPH on the highway between Boca Chica and Santo Domingo. If I were not there it would not have happened. I also killed the dead donkeys at the side of the road next to the children.

3) I should not have worn the big t-Shirt with the bulls eye that says "Idiot tourist with loads of US $" Come rip me off. I love the excitement.

4) Instead I should have been friendlier. I should have politely asked everyone where the next tourist destination is so I can go give out more cash.

5) I also should have brought more friends with me. If I bring more tourists $, the natives can build the rest of the city that is falling down.

6) I should also not pay attention to anything that is going on in the DR. Dublin is full of crack heads and terrorists. I have never been to Ireland but that is beside the point. Dublin is way more dangerous than anything happening in the DR. Those jaywalkers are suicidal. Don?t ever rent a car there.

7) Repeat after me. "It is my fault I am prey and not the predator". To hell with the natives ripping me off, I need to learn and should be ripping them off.

8) The 10 Million plastic bottles washing up on shore at the Malecon is not trash. They are homes to all the hermit crabs and therefore part of the natural beauty of the place.

9) I should not have visited the tourist places. I should expect to get ripped off there. Instead I should have gone straight to the local bowling alley where I can meet the real people. I would have blended in and had a great time.

10) I need to stay in my gated community in the Bronx and never leave. I have never experienced the real world.

11) I need to go to other third world countries before I visit the DR. Then I can see that your third world country is not nearly as third worldly as the rest of the third world. I guess that puts you top of the **** heap.

I have to go now. Agent Scully and Mulder are on to my agenda and are after me.

Besides there are better things to do. Like watch the movie " A Few Good Men". I just love that line:

"You can't handle the truth!"
