Introducing myself

Hi all,

I'll make a short introduction. My name is Michael and I'm a citizen of the USA. Although I'm only 35 I'm unfortunately retired do to a muscular disease called Torsion Dystonia.

About two years ago (that's when I retired) I left for Thailand. I've been living in Pattaya Thailand for two years now and I've been having the time of my life. Unfortunately I'm to young to get a retirement visa (must be 50) and they've recently changed their visa regulations so I will no longer be able to stay here. In about six or seven months I'm going to have to leave.

I rather enjoy being an expatriot and I pretty much need a tropical climate as the cold can be pretty uncomfortable for me.

I never intended to stay in South East Asia so long. It's just that the women are so much fun here! I'm going to miss that feminin attention!

Anyway, since I've got Asia off my list I want to investigate the Carribean. Specifically two places interest me although I don't know much about either. Jamaica is one and the Dominican Republic is the other.

Don't know if I can afford to live on either Island. I know that in the DR it's pretty easy to get residency and that's important for me as I'll want to buy a house after I live in the place for a year or more and decide I like it.

I'll be asking a lot of questions in the various forums. I hope to make some friends here.

PS. My Torsion Dystonia has been stable since my second brain surgery in 1985 and doesn't require any medical attention, medication or services.

welcome Michael

I have never been to Thailand myself, however I have met with many who have and are now living here in the DR.

Most have told me its a great place about equal in a lot of ways to the DR.
and they would return in a New York Minute. Others on this board can give you a better idea then me.

However I have lived in Jamaica and there is (NOW) no comparison with this wonderfull country I now call home the Dominican Republic.....

I can tell you from living here myself 15 years that the Dominican Woman are in no short supply and are allways willing to welcome you in the same ways of your Thai people.

Good Luck with your choice.

Michael, I absolutely agree with Gringo. I have travelled throughout the world and I have fallen in love and settled here in DR, it hooks you and you can live inexpensively. I have managed to get medical insurance for a pre existing condition. Jamaica is extremely dangerous now, there are so many wars between the "Yardies" (gangs) for the drugs. Some hospitals are completely grilled in, and gangs still chase each other to hospital and have shoot outs. Maybe I'm biased but this place is the best and so are some of the people, and I found DR1 and the help I received from it and the folks fantastic, good luck.

LadyBoys??????? THAT sounds like an interesting one Graham!!!! Don't hijack this thread though, start a new one & you'll have us all agog!!!

Michael - Welcome to the DR1 board & the new friends you have just started to make. We, (She who must be Obeyed" & myself) moved here from the UK nearly 12 years ago & we love it. From all I hear, Jamaica is very expensive these days & a lot more dangerous than the DR. You WILL be welcome here - more so if this idiot Mejia gets booted out next week!!!

Bring on the questions Sir, this board is here to help!! - Grahame.

Ladyboys

Well, I don't actually have any pictures of Ladyboys because I don't want to lead them on. But, for the team, I'll try and get one.

They're a rather odd sort. A strange mishmash of masculine and feminine features. A few are actually quite pretty. All of this is wrapped up in a pretty much Halloween/pornstar stereotyped behavior of a woman. Very strange. Not my cup of tee

Never heard of it..

Are they boys, or are they girls? Are they entertainers? hookers? What is their function in life? Please tell me about these creatures? What will happen if you lead them on? (Oh boy! another one for Anna methinks).

Not wishing to hijack this thread and of course this is not strictly DR related so feel free to delete or whatever but seeing as you are asking from my experience and not being an expert of course but allegedly Ladyboys are transvestites or trans-sexuals in the Thai prostitution business. Some have the full meat and 2 veg packet others have had the complete nip and tuck job!!
Some of them are very convincing....(again allegedly!!)

Spent a lot of time in Thailand after the War in Vietnam.

When I first went to Pattaya Beach,About 1972)there was only one street, and one "R&R Hotel" run by the US Military!I married a Thai woman, and took her to Boston. We have a 24 year old son.I came to Santop Domingo in 1986 to get divorced! I married a woman from Santo Domingo almost 9 years ago.We live here and have 3 children.
Now for the inportant part. You can find a woman,or lots of women, here! They make Thai women seem like "Nuns"!
I learned to speak Thai at the American University of Bangkok. It is really difficult! Spanish is much easier!
We are 3 hours from New York, not 18 hours!
You can't get by on $500 US a month here, but you can on $1,500!
Come on Down. The North Coast is cheaper than Santo Domingo.Spend a couple of months in Sosua.Contact "Eddy" at CondominiosDominicanos for a place to stay.Sosua will remind you,in a way,of Pattaya! Good Luck! Cris Colon

Welcome to the board and welcome in advance to the Dominican Republic. The DR is better than modern day Jamaica, hands down. How is Thailand? That's a country I always wanted to go, but never made it there. I heard they went through a similar economic rollercoaster as the DR (boom and bust), is the country still on it's feet or is it still on thin ice? Just wondering since DR seems to be following Thailands footsteps, as odd as that is. Anyways, Welcome!

-Hope your muscles can take Merengue because that's the way of life in Dominican Republic. :cheeky:

My 2 cents

After recently visiting Thailand a month ago, I have to say that every single guy should make the pilgramage to Thailand just to experience the country. And I would consider taking a trip once a year just to go shopping for clothing. I had two custom fitted suits and a black blazer made for under $200 bucks.

But I have to say that there is no place like DR to live in. You get the low cost of living and the women to go with it. So come and stay a while, I'm sure you'll agree.

Hehe, and what are their fees?? Xtra service included...

100 baht is about US$2.50. (40 to $1)

shortime with a beerbar girl is 500 baht + 200 baht barfine
Longtime 1000 baht + 200 baht barfine

A GoGo girl shortime is 1000 baht + 500 or 600 baht barfine or on special occassions 1000 baht.
Longtime 1,500 baht plus barfine

The hotter the girl the more it's going to cost though. Super hot gogo girls might ask 1,500 or more shortime. They all ask 2000 longtime but most can be negotiated down to 1,500.

Basically, as I understand it, the guys and katoeys are half the cost of the women.

It's easy to get (unwanted) attention from the Katoeys and I've heard they they can be had for 300 baht or less. They are very aggressive and can be somewhat of a pest. I'm also told they give the best bj's in the world.

Some katoeys are gay men in drag, some are men that want to be women and as such are in various stages of surgical and hormonal alteration. I believe t was the Thai military that did a poll and found that 5% of men wanted to be women.

Oh God, Thai is the language from Hell for sure. The funny thing is, even when the falang speaks Thai perfectly the Thai often doesn't hear it. It's very strange.

Thailand's great! Except if you're younger than 50 getting a good long stay visa is hard. Getting residency is, for all practicle purposes, impossible. You cannot own land, you can own a condo but only a certian percentage of units within a building can be owned by falang, I believe it's 49%.

Thailand had a meltdown in 97, the baht went from the 20's to $1 to the 40's to 1. For the last several months it's been in the 39 to $1 but for the past several days it's been in the 40 to $1 area.

Currently a bubble is forming in the real estate sector. Real estate prices have been rising along the eastern seaboard do to things like car manufacturers moving here. Pattaya real estate especially so, particularly in new condo buildings. I don't think it'll last though. I really don't understand Thai economics and I really don't trust Thai institutions. South East Asia is extremely corrupt.
