I happened to be watching the Weather Channel this afternoon while they were interviewing one of their correspondents who is waiting in Florida for the arrival of Ivan. Commenting on the efforts of area residents to cover their windows, he indicated that a study done for the insurance industry showed that in a category 3 hurricane the wind passes right through plywood less than 3/4" thick and breaks the glass.

Who knows what it will take to fully protect against a category 4 or 5 storm?

I was quite surprised by the report, I thought any plywood barrier would to the job, but apparently that is not the case.

Hurrican Ivan

Did not hurricane Jeane pass over DR last season? We just went on a trip there a last month and were wondering but never got around to asking.

I am from Pensacola FL where the worst of Ivan landed. There is quite a contraversy here about whether or not it hit at a cat 5. The weather stations were knocked out so the difinitve evidence is not there. Needless to say we got it real, real bad.
