well I just heard through my airline: Airtransit that Punta Cana airport is closed tomorrow 9/19/04..from what I have read it sounds like the airport is ok?? Is that true?? Are the roads not clear/flooded.??..I am very disappointed to have to reschedule my trip...I called my hotel: Club Carabela Bavaro Beach Resort & Casino in Punta Cana near El Cortecito, & was told there is just minor damage, some water, some trees down & no structural damage..if anyone can help me regarding damage to area around the airport I would really appreciate that !!!!

***how long will it take until things get back to normal in DR?? I am planning on rebooking my week vacation sometime between two weeks & the end of Oct. ??
Any advise would be really helpful. Thanks : )

Airport is NOT closed

Airport is up and running. Altough flights are not bringing passengers, just taking them out. Hotels would have to close for a couple of weeks to clean up and do maintenance to their facilities. The roads are being cleaned as we speak, electricity came back on friday and water service is working.

Does someone knows for how long airport will be closed in Punta Cana?

The airport is not closed, its the hotels that are uninhabitable. There is no way to recieve food supplies, gasoil etc from Santo Domingo/La Romana therefore hotels cannot stay open, eventually there will be no fuel for transportation. Once the bridges are repaired I would imagine the hotels will be able to return to normal as supplies will get through.

This is hurricane season & it normally lasts until the end of October/early November. You best option in my humble opinion is to leave your holiday for the latest moment possible to you - give the hotels/local resources time to clear up & any last minute hurricanes to show themselves prior to coming .... hopefully!!! - Grahame.
