My fiance and I need to travel from the airport in Santo Domingo (SDQ) to our resort (Viva Wyndham Dominicus Palace) this Sunday. We have heard there is a bridge out, so ground travel is not possible. Is this true? If so, is a flight on Air Santo Domingo our only option? Is it better to fly into La Romana airport or Punta Cana? How can we book the flight?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

The problem you have is that the bridge between La Romana and Viva Wyndham Dominicus Palace (Bayahibe) is out. As of right now, your only option is to fly into Punta Cana airport.

Will the bridge be up and running by Sunday? According to the Minister of Tourism, yes. But I wouldn't put money on it, a lot can happen from now until Saturday.

"Tourism Minister Felix Jimenez told the Listin Diario that the Chavon crossing would be operational by Saturday, 25 September".

I would seriously look at trying to get a flight from Santo Domingo to Punta Cana if you 100% need to be at Viva on Sunday.

Check back here for updates, plus also contact the resort and your tour operator for updates. Maybe Viva have a plan of action as many people are in the same predicament as yourself.

Thanks for the information Robert. Any suggestions on how to book the flight to Punta Cana? Can I take care of it from the US, or do I need to wait until I get to Santo Domingo?

Maybe Viva will give you a voucher or refund for you to wait out the fixing of the bridge in Santo Domingo in case it is not in place for Saturday. The Colonial City is a lovely place to stay -- lots of boutique hotels. Or the big ones for nights playing at the casino. See http://dr1.com/directories/index.shtml

My guess is that they may get it done because so much is at stake on that bridge.

Another option would be for you to spend time in the Viva Resort in Cabarete on the north coast -- then you get a two for one vacation. You would have to take the bus to Sosua and from there a cab to Cabarete. Or just switch your vacation to the Viva Tangerine if the road is not fixed in time and stay there. Next time come to Viva Dominicus.

Just got in photos of Viva Dominicus after the hurricane. See http://espanol.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/kellinjimenez/slideshow?.dir=/a5b8&.src=ph
