I am looking for information about the environmental and renewable energy laws currently on the books in the Dominican Republic. If anyone can point me to any internet links, or knows of a U.S. library which may have the information, I would be much obliged.

Busco informacion sobre las leyes que gobiernan el medio ambiente y la produccion de energia en la Republica Dominicana. Se agradezco si me pueda dar informacion sobre paginas del web donde puedo encontrar esta informacion.

Well, Phillips, as far as I know there is not yet a law per se on renewable energy in the DR. There are several environmental laws and regulations on the books. You can either browse through the environment ministry's site to try to find them (www.ceiba.gov.do) or find them all -- plus a bill on biodiversity in the Congress -- ready for download in one spot at the following address: http://www.temasactuales.com/laws_policies/legislation_Dominican Repub.html

Hope this helps!

Further answering your question with regard to renewable energies, the DR and a group of aid agencies (led by GTZ and USAID) agreed at a global meeting in Bonn, Germany in June to commit to fostering renewable energy sources in the DR and to proposing and passing a new and set of regulations to promote and facilitate it. For a quick blurb on the Bonn meeting, see http://www.temasactuales.com/whats_new/news_page.php?news_id=137
For what the DR and its donors propose/pledge to do, check out page #5 of the following document:

Hope this helps!

Thanks much, especially for the link to the Secretaria's page. Ley 64-2000 is the start I need. The other information will also be of great help.

If you know of anyone in Chicago who would consent to speak to law students about the D.R.'s efforts toward sustainable development, please let me know.
