I don't agree that the NHC promises clear weather for 5 or more days, since it has no more control over the weather than you or I do. But presently there is nothing on the horizon. Their usual practice is to say nor tropical storm formation forecast for a day or two.

Normally, when these storms form they do so far off in the Atlantic so that there is a week or more of advance notice that something is on the way. Since nothing now on way or expected through Friday, your chances of a trouble free vacation in Puerto Plata is very good.

Also, keep in mind that though Jeanne passed through Puerto Plata, this was very, very unusual. Puerto Plata has a very good record with respect to trouble from hurricanes and tropical storms. Almost always they remain in the Caribbean, or have started north to the Bahamas before they get to Puerto Plata.

You have more to worry about in your life, in my opinion, than being caught in a hurricane during your vacation in Puerto Plata.

The fact that Jeanne past near Puerto Plata adds to the appeal of vacationing in Pto. Pta. with not much hurricane worries. Think about it, when was the last storm that hit Puerto Plata head on? If memory serves me correct, that is never!

When was the last time a storm came as close as Jeanne to Puerto Plata? Some say the late 1960s others say in the 1980s there was one, the point is that if history says anything it will be that Puerto Plata is going to be Hurricane free for quite some time now.

Also, earthquake wise, the fault lines lost a huge pressure last year as most of us know very well. Don't expect a quake to strike anytime soon either.

Actually, Jeanne is forecast to go west over the northern Bahamas they into Central Florida and turn north up the East coast. Vertually zero chance of heading back to DR. Here is a web site to check status on tropical storms .... its the best one I've found:

http://www.wunderground.com/tropical/

We're heading to DR at the end of Oct ... the last week of hurricance season

Puerto Plata is Fine

Just got back from Puerto Plata and it's fine. I stayed at the SunVillage and it was beautiful. I went to Playa Dorada to the Casino and Disco and everything there was running normal.

Panicking?

Stress is very unhealthy.

At this time of year, you really should book last minute trips.
It is way less expensive plus you can check the forcast for excessive rain and potential hurricanes.
Of course these long range forcasts leave much to be desired, but surely it is better to see all sun and some clouds as opposed to all t-storms and such.

The forcast looks fine.
Calm down and have a great trip.
