We are planning a vacation to DR and would like to visit more than one place. If you could answer a few questions it would be very helpful.

Is is feasible to stay at the Decameron near Santo Domingo and then move to the Allegro Bavara in Punta Cana? Is there transportation between the two cities and how much does it cost? How are the roads between the two places? How many miles and how long does it take to drive? Is is OK to rent a car and drive around ourselves?

How is the night life in both places? How close are they to the beach? Is there great snorkeling?

Thank You very much.

Yes, Decameron is about 40 minutes from Santo Domingo, but there is lots of construction going on at the entrance to Santo Domingo, so figure about an hour an a half to get into the city.

Santo Domingo has lots of nightlife, and the history of the first city of the New World. Spend a night or two and see Santo Domingo (it will host the 2003 Pan Am Games).

Decameron has okay night life, some casinos, and a long beach stretch.

And Punta Cana has a fantastic beach; the resorts offer their own entertainment, but it's not a place to go for nightlife. People go to Punta Cana for the great beach.

You can rent a car in Santo Domingo and head East and see Boca Chica (first town on this beach strip), Juan Dolio, La Romana (visit Altos de Chav?n), you could stay at Dominicus Viva Resort (lovely beach, great food), and then head on to Allegro Bavaro in Punta Cana. For the Viva Dominicus web site see www.vivaresorts.com

On this trip you will only be seeing half of the country. Next time head north spending time in the mountains and in Puerto Plata, Playa Grande area and Samana.
