A few of us are flying into SD, and need to get over to Cabarete. Someone mentioned a greyhound type service... a 4 hour bus trip. I don't remember the details. Also would it be cheaper to rent a car and just drive ourselves? Plus, we need to be back at SD airport on Christmas Day, does the bus service run on holidays?

Caribe Tours run on holidays as well, but it would be worth confirming it once you get here.
The taxi from the Santo Domingo airport to the bus depot would cost approx. $25 US and $6 or $7 per person to Sosua on the bus, plus an additional $10 fron Sosua to Cabarete by taxi.
The whole trip may take you 6 to 7 hours, so it may be worth paying for a taxi to drive you straight there. You should be able to negotiate it for $100 US and you would arrive in approx 4 hours.

Caribe Tours buses leave from Santo Domingo on the hour from 6 am to 7pm. The end of the line is Sosua. Take a taxi from Sosua to Cabarete. They travel on holidays.

For the return, the buses leave Sosua at 20 minutes past every hour from 5:20 am to 6:20 pm.

Bus far is US$6/person each way.

As Rocky (Marco) suggested, taking a taxi directly to Cabarete from Santo Domingo will ease your worries alot. Taking all of those connections from the taxi to the bus depot, the bus to Sosua and then over to Cabarete again by taxi there is a lot that can go wrong (and it will). You aren't saving that much money; take a taxi direct to Cabarete and enjoy the scenery.
